Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon

A substantive post as a Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon is available at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. Applications are open until the closing date of 14 May 2026 and may be submitted for joint working arrangements.

The appointee will work flexibly within the Upper Limb team and participate in the multi disciplinary team for managing patients with complex orthopaedic problems. On call duties will also be part of the role.

Main duties of the job

This 1 WTE Consultant will support elective recovery and help meet national RTT targets, enhance tertiary and quaternary arthroplasty services, and manage periprosthetic joint infections in partnership with the Bone Infection Unit and the elbow arthroplasty network.

Job responsibilities
  • Deliver shoulder and elbow arthroplasty procedures, including complex cases and periprosthetic joint infection management.
  • Lead and participate in the Upper Limb multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to service improvement initiatives and quality improvement projects.
  • Engage in academic activities such as teaching, audit, and research.
Qualifications / Training
  • Full GMC registration and license to practice.
  • GMC specialist registration in orthopaedic surgery or within six months of achieving CCT in orthopaedic surgery at interview.
  • General orthopaedic training including hip and knee surgery, with a minimum of 12 months fellowship in knee surgery.
  • Higher medical degree (e.g., MSc, PhD).
  • Experience in the management of infected joint replacements and periprosthetic fractures.
Professional training
  • Minimum 18 months specialist knee experience.
  • Evidence of consultant level decision making and management of complex clinical problems.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Experience
  • Working in a tertiary referral centre for complex shoulder and elbow arthroplasty.
  • Experience in leading clinical teams and implementing service improvement initiatives.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Excellent leadership, administrative, and time management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills in both written and spoken English.
  • Teaching and supervision experience for students and junior staff.
  • Active participation in clinical governance, risk management, audit, and publication.
  • Familiarity with NHS organisation and governance frameworks.
Other Requirements
  • Access to reliable transport.
  • Valid driving licence.
