Consultant Radiologist S.I. Interventional Radiology - Cork University Hospital for 37 hours per week
This is an appointment to the HSE South West Region on a Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Cork University Hospital for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE's National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
Main Duties of the JobThe successful candidate will be expected to provide and expand Interventional and Diagnostic Radiology services in Cork University Hospital.
CUH is a tertiary referral centre providing Diagnostic and Interventional Radiological Services to a wider population of approx. 1.2 million people on a 24/7 basis. The Department provides expert Neuro and Body IR services across the full range of procedures including stroke thrombectomy, aneurysm coiling, vascular and non-vascular body interventional imaging, RF ablation, tumour chemoembolization, drainage and biopsy procedures. The service continues to expand and we now have plans to open an additional interventional suite to accommodate the growing demand.
A cross city on call is provided overnight and at weekends on a 1:7 on call rota at present. Further growth in the IR Department is also evident in new proposals to introduce a full time anaesthetics cover to the Department to allow for more complex IR procedures and improve the patient experience. Expansion of the trauma service including the opening of a dedicated CT scanner in the Emergency Department will also increase the need for IR management of trauma cases (eg embolization).
Principal Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be expected to integrate into the existing team of consultant radiologists based at CUH, which currently provides the following services:
- 24/7 on call emergency diagnostic radiology service
- 24/7 on call emergency interventional radiology service
- 24/7 on call emergency Neuro interventional service
- 24/7 inpatients imaging in CUH
- Breast imaging services
The Radiology service in Cork University Hospital serves a population of 1.2 million in the greater Munster region. It provides Inpatient, Outpatient and 24/7 on call interventional radiology services with a significant patient throughput.
The radiologists work in the context of a Radiology department with emergency, in patient and outpatient imaging. The radiology department at CUH provides expertise in a vast array of imaging techniques including Xray, CT, Ultrasound, MRI, Fluoroscopy, Nuclear medicine including PET and digital mammography. Multiple diagnostic and therapeutic interventions are performed including biopsies, non vascular intervention, vascular interventional Radiology and interventional Neuro radiology. There is excellent collegiality among clinicians and within the radiology department. The successful post holder will be expected and encouraged to integrate within the existing team and embrace the ethos of the group.
The appointment is whole time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st February 2026:
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
