POOA6206 Consultant Psychiatrist in the Psychiatry of Old Age
This is an appointment to the HSE Dublin & South East Region on a Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to MHS Tipperary South for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE's National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
Main Duties of the JobThe permanent filing of this post ensures the availability of an appropriate senior medical decision maker within the team enhancing the care provided to patients via the provision of specialist clinical expertise, experience and treatment skills. Appropriate clinical leadership will support the other CMHT members in performing within their scope of practice to deliver a high quality community service and enable the service to meet the increasing clinical demand.
The South Tipperary POA service operates under the principles of delivering a hospital linked, community oriented service for older people with new onset mental disorder including those with dementia requiring psychiatric management. Services delivered include acute and continuing inpatient psychiatric care, clinic and domiciliary care, nursing home assessment and POA consultation-liaison.
Operational, strategic, developmental, clinical, administrative and other duties that will apply to the post:
- To practice as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Psychiatry of Old Age with HSE South Tipperary MHS Mental Health Services
- To attend at South Tipperary Mental Health Services and other facilities with a commitment to the regular provision of services at such times as may be determined by the HSE, or other designated officers, and in emergencies as required and to remain in attendance as long as his/her services are required.
- To participate in the Consultant 'on call' rota, to cover the Approved Centres, Day Hospitals, Crisis & Respite Units and other services within the C/K/ST MHS
- Support the mental health liaison services within the C/K/ST MHS
- To be responsible for the care and treatment of patients in his/her clinical charge.
- To attend at any clinic or site maintained by the HSE as appropriate and to provide either there or in the appropriate hospital such diagnostic, treatment or consultation services as may be appropriate.
- To visit regularly and be responsible for the medical care and treatment of patients under his/her charge.
General:
- To reside convenient to South Tipperary Mental Health Services
- To ensure compliance with all HSE national and local policies and procedure.
- All staff are responsible for identifying, assessing and reporting all risks and for contributing to the management and review of all risks.
- To ensure that satisfactory arrangements exist for the custody and administration of the dangerous drugs in his/her department.
Carlow/Kilkenny & South Tipperary Mental Health Service is a sub division of HSE Dublin & South East Mental Health Services which provides specialist mental health care to a population of 258,438 (as per 2022 census) who reside in the counties of Carlow, Kilkenny and South Tipperary. This catchment area contains urban and rural areas with some areas of relatively high socio-economic deprivation.
The Carlow/Kilkenny & South Tipperary Mental Health Service aims to deliver services via the allocation of multidisciplinary teams to designated geographical sectors in line with the recommendations of 'Vision for Change'. The allocated community mental health teams work closely with other teams, Acute Hospital Services, nursing homes and local General Practitioners to facilitate the delivery of an integrated service and aim to co ordinate care in a manner that optimises the opportunities available to individual service users to avail of resources within their own communities and, in so far as possible, to maintain their independence.
The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st June 2026:
€238,221 €251,098 €264,691 €271,846 €278,998 €286,151
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
