Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH) MCS is pleased to advertise for a Consultant General Paediatrician with expertise in Paediatric Cardiology (PECSIG) to join the Division of Medicine. The postholder will work collaboratively within the division to provide a crucial link between the General Paediatric team at Wythenshawe Hospital and the tertiary Paediatric Cardiology service. They will contribute to the acute paediatric service and be part of a 1:7 hot week rota, with on-call and resident duties. The postholder will in addition have have defined PAs to lead and manage Paediatric Cardiology clinics at Wythenshawe, providing expert assessment, investigation and follow-up for children with congenital or acquired heart disease.

This postholder will be one of two consultants with expertise in Paediatric Cardiology to work at the Wythenshawe site and will benefit from involvement with the tertiary Paediatric Cardiology network including access to the regional MDTs, teaching and educational sessions and radiology meetings, as well as ongoing professional development support.

This post is based at Wythenshawe Hospital, although clinics and educational sessions may need to be delivered across the MFT footprint to meet service requirements. Cross-site work may therefore be required.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be contracted for an average of 10 programmed activities (PA) per week. The job plan will be agreed when the post commences but will include:

• 1 in 7 hot weeks and 1 in 7 on call
• 1.5PA for core CPD and any remaining SPA to contribute to activities of the department
• The postholder will be an educational/ clinical supervisor for 2 paediatric trainees, contribute to induction and post graduate education, undergraduate education, governance activities, audit, and research
• General Paediatric outpatient clinics
• Paediatric cardiology outpatient clinics
• Inpatient Triage - Act as the local specialist consultant for acute paediatric, emergency department, and neonatal cardiac referrals within Wythenshawe Hospital, defining acute stabilization strategies and coordinating tertiary escalation.
• Non-Invasive Diagnostics - Independently perform, interpret, and report paediatric electrocardiograms (ECGs), ambulatory monitoring (24 hour tapes), and diagnostic paediatric echocardiograms within the competency framework of the RCPCH SPIN curriculum.
• Transition Alignment Collaborate closely with the RMCH Consultant body and the Manchester Heart Centre to oversee the local transition pathway for congenital cardiac patients moving into adult services.

Person specification Qualifications and Training

• MBChB or equivalent
• Completion of general professional training (paediatric medicine)
• Completion of higher specialist training in paediatric medicine. Must be on the specialist register or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT or equivalent at the time of interview.
• Successful completion of the RCPCH SPIN Module in Paediatric Cardiology OR formal portfolio evidence (e.g., CESR / Portfolio Pathway) proving equivalent tertiary training (minimum 12-18 months equivalent tertiary experience)
• Full registration with the GMC and Licensed to Practice
• Registered on the GMC Specialist Register (or be within 6 months of CCT date/ equivalent from the date of interview)
• Postgraduate diploma or higher degree relevant to Paediatric Cardiology or Advanced Medical Imaging
• Certification or advanced experience in neonatal functional echocardiography
• Documented experience working within a structured Managed Clinical Network (MCN) in the UK

Skils and Knowledge

• Experience of teaching medical students
• Competence in independent diagnostic paediatric echocardiography
• Complete proficiency in stabilization protocols for acute paediatric cardiac emergencies.
• Experience of teaching junior medical staff
• Confidence and proven ability to attend the JCC and present cases in coordination with RMCH cardiologists within tertiary panels.
• Track record of clinical audit, quality improvement projects, or research presentations at national specialist group meetings (e.g., PECSIG or BCCA)

• Publications in peer reviewed journals or demonstrable commitment to developing research in the Trust
