Consultant Ophthalmologist with Interest In Paediatric Ophthalmology

This is a newly created Consultant post. The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary team to provide and develop ophthalmic care for paediatric patients. The role also involves managing motility-related presentations in both adults and children. Additionally, the post requires active participation in the general workload of the Care Group, with a significant commitment to teaching and training junior staff (medical and non-medical).
Main duties of the jobThe position is primarily based at King's College Hospital's Denmark Hill site, with potential support for other King's sites. The post may also include clinics at University Hospital Lewisham and ROP screening across various sites covered by King's, such as Denmark Hill, The Princess Royal University Hospital, University Hospital Lewisham, and Queen Elizabeth Woolwich. Job responsibilities- Provide high-quality patient care, including treatment and management duties for the Care Group.
- Share responsibility for 24/7 cover on a rota basis, including leave and sickness coverage.
- Supervise junior medical/dental practitioners.
- Participate in teaching, examinations, accreditation, CPD, and clinical governance.
- Manage outpatient clinics at peripheral hospitals as agreed.
- Contribute to research, audits, Morbidity and Mortality meetings, Clinical Governance, and Learning from Deaths initiatives.
- Assist in formulating and monitoring the Care Group's Business Plan.
- Ensure activities align with contracted service levels and operating plans.
- Provide professional leadership within the specialty.
- Collaborate with colleagues to maintain productivity and staff job satisfaction.
- Undertake management duties as agreed.
- Comply with infection prevention and control policies.
- Implement evidence-based protective interventions to ensure patient safety.
- Support the Trust's commitment to 7-day consultant-led services.
- FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent
- Additional higher degrees such as MD or PhD
- Full GMC registration
- Inclusion on the GMC Ophthalmology Specialist Register at the start of employment
- Extensive experience in ophthalmology, with certification (CCT or CESR)
- Advanced subspecialty training in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus
- Proficiency in high-volume, complex cataract surgeries
- Experience managing ophthalmology services in a busy teaching hospital
- Familiarity with IT and NHS structures
- Leadership skills in multidisciplinary settings
- Management qualification or training
- Understanding of medical audit principles
- Experience in publishing audit findings
- Experience in clinical research
- Publication of reviews or case reports
- Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Teaching qualification or skills course
This position is subject to DBS checks in accordance with UK regulations.
Salary ranges from £105,504 to £139,882 per annum, excluding London Zone Allowance.
