Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust seeks to appoint a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join its dynamic and ambitious team. This is a replacement post due to retirement. The Trust wishes to appoint an applicant who holds a certificate of completion of specialist O&G training. Experience in advanced Obstetric ultrasound would be an advantage. A decision about their eligibility for the post will be taken by the short listing panel once the qualifications of the field of applicants are established.

The successful candidate will join a large cohesive team of 24 consultants, providing general and specialised obstetrics and gynaecology services to the population of East Hampshire and neighbouring areas. The post will be based at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. The job plan will initially be based on ten programmed activities and will include participation in the obstetrics and gynaecology on call rota.
Main duties of the jobThe remit of the post holder will be to support specialised Obstetric services alongside the provision of general obstetric and gynaecology services. The appointee will be responsible for the running of the Rainbow clinic, a specially commissioned ultrasound based service for women who have suffered previous stillbirth, neonatal death or late termination for fetal reasons. There will also be a growth scan clinic on alternate weeks, and opportunity to support the Multiple Birth and Preterm Clinics.
The post holder will be expected to have a fortnightly elective Caesarean section list in their job plan to facilitate safe delivery of high risk cases, as well as a fortnightly half day session in the Maternity Assessment Unit reviewing pregnant people presenting to the service acutely. Job responsibilitiesThe post holder would be expected to assist with covering colleagues when they are unavailable. This can be offered prospectively with job planning, or ad hoc with additional compensation.
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology on call rota comprises 1:14 weeknights: Monday Thursday, approx. 20 per year, mix of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and average 1:7 weekends. Labour Ward is covered by a Consultant of the Day, and Gynaecology is arranged into Hot weeks Monday Friday.
Labour ward is covered by a Consultant Obstetrician for a minimum of 82 hours a week. This comprises Monday Friday , Saturday and Sunday and . Unpredictable clinical work may necessitate Consultant presence outside of these times.

Qualifications- Full GMC registration
- On the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of receiving CCT (or equivalent), in O&G
- MRCOG or equivalent approved by PMETB
- Completion of RCOG ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice or equivalent (Core curriculum 2024)
- Completion of Fetal Care, Pregnancy Care or equivalent (SITMS RCOG 2024)
- Clinical training and experience in ante natal and intra partum obstetrics equivalent to that required for a UK CCT
- Ability to offer acute care as the Obstetric consultant alongside a Level 3 Neonatal Unit with experience in management of extreme prematurity.
- Demonstrable team working skills.
- Experience with complex Obstetric surgery, e.g. placenta accreta spectrum, fibroids and supermorbid obesity.
