6142 Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist S.I. Uro- Gynaecology (2 posts) Cork University Maternity Hospital for 18.5 hours per week.

This is an appointment to the HSE South West Region on a Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Cork University Maternity Hospital for 18.5 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganization of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE's National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

Please note: The Letter of Approval for this position contains a reference to the Consultants Contract 2008 and Contract Type. With the implementation of the Public Only Consultant Contract 2023 (POCC23) on the 8th March 2023, all candidates should be aware that the only contract to be offered for this position is POCC23.

As outlined in HR Memo - Haddington Road Agreement (HRA) hours reversal on 29th June 2022, there is a 2 hour reduction for Consultants that are on 39 hours per week (to 37 hours per week)

Due to the establishment of the HSE Health regions and the geographic realignments of the CHO Areas/Hospital Groups within these regions, the appointing service may differ from that outlined in the Letter of Approval for this post

Main Duties of the Job

This post relates to the improvement of access for women to urogynaecological services in Cork. An analysis of the unacceptably long waiting lists for outpatient gynaecology and urogynaecology assessment and urogynaecological surgery in Cork concluded that an additional 1WTE consultant obstetrician / urogynaecologist services are required in Cork for the urogynaecology service. A key element of this post involves the development and leadership of a new translabial scanning service, comprising the set up and provision of this resourced service and an ongoing sustainable plan for translabial scanning for the next 5 - 10 years.

The consultant post will be structured so that the current long waiting lists will be eliminated and future waiting times for outpatient assessment and urogynaecological surgery will be in line with internationally-accepted norms. While core obstetric commitments will be required, the majority of clinical sessions related to these posts will be dedicated to urogynaecology.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

0.5 WTE Consultant Obstetrician/ Gynaecologist s.i. Urogynaecology at CUMH (18.5 hours )

To practice as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist s.i. Urogynaecology with the schedule approved by the Consultant Appointments Unit and the Clinical Director for CUMH:

• On call duties: participating within the existing rota for patients of CUMH.
• General obstetrics and (uro)gynaecology duties: labour ward duty, theatre, diagnostics, day services, outpatient commitment to outreach clinics and in patient ward rounds.
• Development, leadership and provision of translabial scanning service.
• Weekly attendance at hospital Grand Rounds.
• Roster based daytime commitment to Labour Ward, in addition to on call at night.
• Liaison with consultant colleagues at Cork University Hospital and other hospitals in the region as required.
• Participation in a multi disciplinary team approach to the assessment and management of patients, including participation in multidisciplinary case conferences.
• All duties and responsibilities to be undertaken and the location/s specified may be subject to revision in the future having regard for the principles of the reconfiguration of services presently underway in HSE South.

Information about the organisation

Cork University Maternity Hospital Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) was opened in 2007 at a cost of €80 million and as well as delivering 6,537 babies in 2025. It is also a national Gynaecology Cancer Centre and leading centre in Research and Innovation. All sub specialties in Obstetrics and Gynaecology are represented at CUMH. This is also the only Irish maternity hospital of this size co located with an acute general hospital, facilitating access to other medical, surgical and radiological specialties. CUMH is 10 minutes driving from Cork International Airport, 2 hours 45 minutes driving to Dublin and has intercity train services to Dublin, Limerick and other cities around Ireland.

CUMH is directly linked to Cork University Hospital (CUH), which is the largest acute hospital in the region, and the only level one trauma centre in the Republic of Ireland. CUMH and CUH primarily treat patients from Cork, Kerry and Tipperary serving a combined population of more than 620,000. The hospital is also a tertiary referral centre for Munster, serving a population of more than 1,173,000.

Within the CUMH theatre suite there are dedicated Gynae theatres, which are fully equipped with the Storz 'OR 1' operating system including the 'AIDA' system. These state of the art theatres are connected to the clinical training facility within the Centre for Research and Innovation on the 5th floor of the building. The theatre has a da Vinci X robot which is used exclusively for gynaecology surgery. This robot has performed more gynaecological surgeries than any other centre in the UK or Ireland including Radical hysterectomies, myomectomies and sacrocolpopexies.

The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st June 2026:

Incremental credit is awarded in respect of previous experience at Consultant level. The standard working week applying to the post is 37 hours per week.

The annual leave associated with the post is 30 working days per annum.
