Consultant Intensive Care MedicineThe closing date is 07 December 2025
We are looking for an enthusiastic and self motivated consultant to join our department as a Substantive Consultant in Intensive Care, starting March 2026.
The successful candidate would join the Intensive Care Unit on call rota (presently 1:8 but may transition to 1:12 with 1:6 weekend double up) and in non ICU weeks either cover 2nd on daytime ICU sessions or support critical care outreach or deliver DCC in a complimentary specialty. It is expected that the successful candidate will also join Mortality Review meetings and MDT meetings (to discuss long term patients) on Wednesday afternoons in their non ICU cover weeks. A central expectation of the successful candidate would be to undertake a leading role in the development and support of services within the umbrella of Critical Care. This may include co developing an in house advanced critical care practitioner programme; working on Cerner (EPR); continuing to develop a post ICU rehabilitation service; supporting the Outreach Team.
Main duties of the jobThere is a local mentorship programme for newly appointed consultants within the Department.
The successful appointee would be expected to actively support and join activities on the ICU including quarterly M&M, Board meetings, weekly Mortality reviews (concurrent with MDT), and twice yearly cross site clinical governance meeting when Audit and Quality Improvement Projects are presented.

Job responsibilitiesThere will be a level of expectation of cross site working at West Middlesex Hospital ICU in emergency situations or as part of a regular Job Plan.
Chelsea ICU participates in ICNARC and works closely within the North-West London Critical Care Network.

Person Specification Education and qualifications- Full Registration with GMC
- CCT in Intensive Care Medicine or equivalent (or within 6 months of inclusion on Specialist register at time of interview)
- FFICM or equivalent
- FRCA or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- Higher Degree
- Experience with management of high risk patients
- Implementation of Audit and Quality Improvement Processes
- Experience teaching, training and supervising resident doctors
- Experience in establishing a service such as Post-ICU Rehabilitation Clinic
- Involvement in Innovation projects & research
- Previous consultant level experience
- Understanding and involvement in Ethics and Governance
- Experience in intensive care medicine
- Experience in burns intensive care
- Ability to participate in and lead multidisciplinary Critical Care team
- Ability to work with colleagues in a team and delegate appropriately
- Experience in Anaesthetics
