Consultant in Renal Medicine

This Consultant Nephrologist (0.8-1.0 WTE) post will be based in the Department of Renal Medicine, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

This post will have three main components:

  • Delivery of care for haemodialysis patients dialysing at a satellite dialysis unit.
  • Rotation through the in-patient renal medicine service at QEHB with a proportion of inpatient time configured to a Monday to Friday renal consult service at Midlands Metropolitan Hospital.
  • Contribution to regular general nephrology clinic and specialist clinics dependent on the experience and interests of the applicant.

The post holder will be an integral part of the nephrology consultant team with a proportion of time allocated to supporting renal services at Midlands Metropolitan Hospital.

There are multiple active research, quality improvement and teaching opportunities within the department, the successful appointee will contribute to these. The successful applicant will be supported to apply for an honorary position within the college of medical and dental sciences at the University of Birmingham.

Main duties of the job

As a consultant the appointee will have full responsibilities for patients under their care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure.

The appointee will share clinical responsibility with colleagues in running the clinical work of the department.

The appointee will play a role in meeting the department's contracted obligations for the provision of renal services and in ensuring that the overall performance of the unit meets the quality criteria agreed with the purchasing consortia.

Job plan:

The job plan varies on a week-by-week basis, based on a 48 week cycle that typically includes up to 12 weeks dedicated to in-patient work.

This work is distributed between the 5-day per week MMUH acute service, a 3 day weekend block of weekend acutes at QEHB and 7 day in-patient care on renal wards.

Weekend on-call frequency will not exceed 1:6 weekends (in patient average 3 PA).

2 SPAs-1.5 core SPA for revalidation/appraisal purposes and 0.5 additional SPA for educational supervision

1.3 PA for satellite dialysis out-patient clinics

2 PA for general nephrology clinics located at Midlands Metropolitan Hospital

1.25 PA clinic time negotiable depending on the applicant specialist interests

Person Specification Qualifications
  • GMC Registration
  • Dual Inclusion on Specialist Register for Renal and Internal Medicine or, if in training, eligible for dual inclusion on the Register within 6 months.
