This is an exciting opportunity to join the Specialist Palliative Care service in Central Lancashire as a substantive consultant. The clinical sessions will be split between community specialist palliative care and inpatient hospice services at St Catherine's Hospice, Preston.
The employing organization is Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which manages all consultants in Specialist Palliative Care within Central Lancashire, covering Preston, Chorley, and South Ribble.
You will collaborate closely with colleagues across Central Lancashire to support the delivery of specialist palliative care, mainly within hospice and community settings. Community duties may include domiciliary visits, GSF meetings, and outpatient clinics, based on clinical needs.
You will also support the 2nd on-call service, providing advice to CNSs in hospital and community, and 1st on-call medical cover at St Catherine's Hospice.
Main duties- Provide senior specialist palliative medical care in community settings and offer advice to colleagues within and outside the specialty.
- Manage medical care for hospice inpatients, including ward rounds, supervising admissions, and supporting junior staff and MDTs.
- Collaborate with the Hospice Medical Director and leadership teams for clinical, operational, and strategic leadership.
- Participate in local palliative and end-of-life care strategies and operational groups.
- Lead clinical audit, quality improvement, and governance activities, including departmental audit and practice review.
- Attend regular specialist palliative care meetings and support multi-professional education and training.
St Catherine's Hospice cares for adults with life-shortening conditions in Chorley, Preston, and South Ribble, serving around 380,000 people and over 2,000 patients annually. It is a University Hospice, supporting placements for medical, nursing, social work, and counselling students. The hospice is an approved training site for NW Palliative Medicine specialty training.

Person specification Qualifications- Full GMC registration with license to practice
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP UK or equivalent
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine via CCT, CESR, or European rights
- Higher Medical Degree (MA, MD, MSc, PhD)
- Experience in hospital, hospice, and community palliative care
- Ability to manage complex palliative cases independently
- Evidence of teaching, supervising, and professional development
- Leadership skills, involvement in audit, service development, and research
