Job Description
Consultant in Palliative Medicine (fixed term for 1 year)

We have an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join the St. Peters Hospice medical team for up to one year, to cover a period of maternity leave. Applications from Specialist Doctors would also be considered.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join the senior medical team of 4 consultants working alongside the multi professional team members to deliver high quality palliative care to patients and families in the wider Bristol area. They will work in a supportive and collaborative environment within a well known local charity with a strong reputation. The role will focus on supporting patients in the community, working closely with our CNS teams, and improving access to services for those with non cancer conditions.

Other information: 28 hours per week (0.7 FTE based on a 40 hour week) - 1 in 5 on call duties. Work pattern subject to confirmation: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday with alternating Friday. Job responsibilities

To share responsibility with the senior medical team for advisory support to the hospice community services, including domiciliary visiting, attendance and leading multi disciplinary team meetings and outpatient appointments.

To share responsibility and engage with clinical community engagement work that seeks to achieve fair access to clinical services, based on need rather than diagnosis, with a focus on non cancer palliative care.

To participate in senior medical cover for the 24 hr Advice Line and to take part in a 1 in 5 second on call rota (Category B) providing senior cover to the inpatient unit and 24/7 advice line.

To be prepared to lead the care of hospice inpatients during short term cover periods or during a defined longer cover period.

To undertake additional duties during emergencies and unforeseen circumstances as necessary for continuity of patient care.

To adhere to GMC codes of practice, participate in the hospice clinical audit programme, comply with clinical and information governance policies, report incidents as required, contribute to policy writing and participate in relevant clinical meetings. To engage with hospice research activity where appropriate.

To demonstrate effective communication with patients and significant others, handle difficult conversations with empathy, maintain patient confidentiality, and adhere to hospice policy regarding concerns and complaints.

To champion equality, diversity and inclusion, foster a supportive team culture, and act as a role model and ambassador for the medical team and hospice.

To engage fully with a continuing professional development framework (e.g., RCP CPD diary) and meet GMC revalidation requirements.

To supervise and manage junior medical staff, act as educational supervisor where trained, oversee teaching of medical students and other professionals, and facilitate external education sessions.

To take on management responsibilities in liaison with the Medical Director and represent the hospice in professional meetings.

Person Specification
  • Full registration and licence to practise with the GMC.
  • MRCP or MRCGP.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or appropriate certificate.
  • Higher academic degree (MD, MSc, PhD) or qualification in teaching.
Experience
  • Recent experience and familiarity with UK healthcare systems.
  • Training in management of patients with specialist palliative care needs.
  • Experience in managing both malignant and non malignant diseases.
  • Knowledge of NHS and voluntary sector management issues.
  • Awareness of core principles and guidelines in research practice.
  • Clinical experience in hospice inpatient and community settings.
Additional Criteria
  • Clinical skills and ability to work at consultant level.
  • Proven teaching ability (large and small group teaching).
  • Willingness to undertake teaching for undergraduates, postgraduates, nursing staff and AHPs.
  • Audit project experience and evidence of completed audit.
  • Good IT skills (word processing, presentations, spreadsheets). Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Driving licence and own transport.
  • Track record in research and willingness to undertake further research.
  • Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Completion of a general management course or programme.
  • Interest in medical management.
  • Advanced communication skills training and educational supervisor training.
