Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate will join an existing dynamic team of four consultants in the Staffordshire area to expand specialist palliative care services at the University Hospitals of North Midlands. Core responsibilities include:
- Provide specialist palliative advice, outpatient services and inpatient care for 10 palliative medicine beds across both hospital sites.
- Work closely with local hospices and community services.
- Lead undergraduate Palliative Care education at Keele University's School of Medicine and contribute to curriculum development.
The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust serves approximately three million people across Royal Stoke and County Hospital sites, and is a specialist centre for major trauma and teaching.
Qualifications- Full registration with the GMC and possession of MRCP.
- Entry on Specialist Register, UK training scheme or within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview, or CESR application in progress through Portfolio Pathway for Specialist Registration.
- A higher degree (e.g., MSc in Palliative Medicine).
- Good general clinical experience in the specialty.
- Experience liaising and coordinating care between multiple clinical teams.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion across all areas of palliative medicine.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care.
- Experience conducting clinical audit.
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues and within a team.
- Flexibility to accommodate changes in work plans when necessary for smooth department operation.
- Experience in service development.
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
- Awareness of current speciality specific developments, initiatives and issues.
- Evidence of training in research methodology.
- Publications in relevant peer reviewed journals within the last five years.
- Evidence of having undertaken original research.
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
- Strategic planning and sound judgement when faced with conflicting pressures.
- Motivation and development of the multi disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.
- Enthusiasm and ability to teach clinical skills to medical staff and students, and staff of other disciplines.
- Substantial experience of teaching medical students.
- Recognised teaching skills course or medical education qualification.
- Experience of leadership, curriculum development and assessment in medical education.
- Energy and enthusiasm; ability to work under pressure.
- An enquiring and critical approach to work.
- Caring attitude to patients.
- Effective communication with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and agencies.
- Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development.
- Understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly reforms, initiatives and issues.
- Ability to travel and be accessible for on call duties.
- A full UK driving licence.
