Consultant in Paediatrics with interest in Paediatric Cardiology

The Jenny Lind Children's Hospital is seeking one substantive 10 PA consultant in paediatrics with expertise and interest in Paediatric Cardiology (PEC). The post is available from April 2026. Successful applicant will provide 1:8 on call to the acute paediatric service including weekend on calls and support inpatient services and outpatient paediatric activity.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to share outpatient responsibilities mainly in paediatric cardiology (up to 3 clinics per week) and contribute to general paediatric outpatient clinics depending on the needs of the service. Further discussion re exact composition of the role can be clarified and discussed with the clinical Lead prior to application and will be reviewed in line with the prior experience of the appointee. This will be formally accepted and reviewed as part of the Job Planning process of the trust.

The 10 PA post comprises 8.5 direct clinical care involving acute paediatrics and cardiology and 1.5 SPA. Acute paediatric services are delivered by a team of consultants working across children's emergency department, children's assessment unit and inpatient wards. This post will have a 1:8 Consultant of the week commitment and will have regular sessions on CAU; additional sessions may be available on an ad hoc basis if the successful applicant is interested.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT in paediatrics OR Equivalent (Proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview).
  • Higher degree such as MD, MSc or PhD.
Experience
  • Applicants who are nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 years training period in the National Health Service required for the specialty.
  • One year experience in cardiology in an accredited tertiary paediatric cardiac centre
  • EPLS or APLS certification
  • Training to level 3 safeguarding and experience of safeguarding at Specialist Registrar or Consultant level.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and commitment to a career in paediatrics
  • HDU/PICU experience
Aptitudes
  • Experience of working in a multi disciplinary team
  • Enthusiasm for service development and teaching
Teaching
  • Experience of formal and on the job clinical teaching
  • Enthusiasm to teach clinical skills
  • Commitment to undergraduate/postgraduate and multidisciplinary teaching & training
  • Recognised postgraduate course in teaching/training (T5 or similar)
  • Postgraduate qualification in teaching (PGCert or similar)
Clinical Governance
  • Able to deliver high quality paediatric care
  • Knowledge and experience of clinical audit
  • Logical, analytical, and self critical approach to clinical practice
  • Expertise in Risk Management
Research
  • Understanding of research techniques and design
  • Evidence based medicine
  • Published research
  • Published papers in area of special interest
Circumstances
  • Flexible outlook on working hours
  • Must live within a 15 mile radius of the base Trust or 30 minutes travelling time when on call
  • Full driving licence
Communications and Language Skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, colleagues in pathology and support staff
  • Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English
  • Ability to present effectively to an audience using a variety of methods and to respond to questions and queries

£109,725 to £145,478 a year (per annum, pro rata)
