Consultant in Paediatrics special interest Diabetes

Applications are invited for Post of Consultant Paediatrician with special interest in Diabetes. We provide a comprehensive range of care to the CYP in the Service and are proud that we consistently have some of the best outcomes in the country, despite operating in an area of significant deprivation.

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a passionate consultant paediatrician. The Post is a substantive Post. This Post will be based in the Paediatric Department of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and you would be expected to work across both Sunderland and South Tyneside localities.

Timetables offer a degree of flexibility in that the type of clinic activity is negotiable and informed by service needs and your experience. This Post offers 10 Programmed Activities. Office space and secretarial support will be available.

You will be expected to have, or to obtain within six months of interview, a CCT in Paediatrics or equivalent (and/or to be included on the GMC's Specialist Register or be eligible for inclusion).

Main duties of the job

You would be joining a team of four other diabetes consultants, eight PDSNs, two HCAs, four admin staff, three dietitians and one psychological therapist (currently open to recruit to a second psychology Post).

We have recently moved to a named consultant system and you would be expected to manage your named workload as well as providing care and support to the other patients in our cohort at times.

We have close links with the adult diabetes teams on both Sunderland and South Tyneside sites and operate a transition pathway for both sites.

You will provide clinical support to the wider paediatric diabetes MDT, take part in our monthly MDT meetings and take part in departmental audit and QI projects. You will take part in the regular (weekly) paediatric consultant meetings.

You will take part in out-of-hours cover for general paediatrics as part of the paediatric rota.

This is a replacement Post due to colleague retirement.

Other responsibilities may include contributing to the coordination and delivery of the strategic aspects of the Service across the South Tyneside and Sunderland area. These will reflect national and local priorities including the strategic direction of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and the Division of Family Care.

Final Job Plan will be agreed in discussion between you and the Clinical Director; and will be subject to annual review.

Job responsibilities

You will join the existing team of Paediatric and Paediatric Diabetes consultants and will be able to deliver outpatient clinics at both Sunderland and South Tyneside Hospitals.

Qualifications
  • Primary medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register for Paediatrics or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC there is flexibility with the six-month period with Executive Medical Director approval .
  • Diabetes SPIN or working towards or Paediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology CCT post-GRID training.
  • Ability to take full responsibility for independent management of patients.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly with patients and other team members.
  • Further specialist interest to support the Department.
Experience
  • Experience of training in paediatric diabetes.
  • Experience and specialist training in insulin pump therapy, continuous glucose monitoring/flash glucose monitoring and hybrid closed loop systems.
  • Extensive experience of general paediatrics.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working within the Specialty.
  • Experience of child protection medical examination and compilation of reports.
  • Experience of transition to adult services in paediatric diabetes.
  • Experience of rare forms of paediatric diabetes.

  • Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.
  • Qualification in medical education.
  • Experience of simulation training.
