Job Description
Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care 
Applications for a part time (5 sessions) substantive Consultant Paediatric Intensivist with potential additional locum consultant post at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.
Closing date: 12 July 2026.
Main duties of the job- Provide specialised PICU services in collaboration with Consultant colleagues, with responsibility for prevention, diagnosis, treatment of illness and promotion of health.
- Have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge and liaise with Consultant colleagues; ensure proper functioning of the department in line with operational and strategic plans.
- Supervise junior medical staff; be responsible for overseeing their training and initial career advice.
- Participate in continuing medical education as required by the Chief Executive.
- Participate in and contribute to Clinical Audit.
- Provide domiciliary consultations as appropriate.
- Participate in on call rota to cover PCCU (currently 1 in 6.5).
- Any other duties agreed with the Health Board.
- On Specialist Register for base specialty with accreditation in Paediatric Intensive Care at application time, or CCT with sub specialty accreditation, or SR with CCT due within 6 months.
- MRCPCH / MRCP / FRCA (or equivalent).
- Valid Level 3 Safeguarding training.
- Completion of all competencies in Paediatric Intensive Care (minimum 2 years) in an RCPCH National GRID approved unit, including minimum 6 months anaesthetic training or equivalent, or experienced substantive Consultant.
- Sub specialty interest.
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding of audit's role.
- Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation.
- Effective team and multidisciplinary working.
- Excellent communication with patients, families, colleagues, managers, agencies, and staff at all levels.
- Ability to work unsupervised and make decisions.
- Proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation.
- Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence to improve clinical outcomes.
- Effective leadership skills.
- Understanding of management issues: medical management, clinical governance, service planning, quality improvement.
