Consultant In Paediatric Dentistry Community Dental Service

The Community Dental Service (CDS) in HDUHB is a Salaried Dental Service providing Oral Health Care Services to vulnerable client groups in line with the Welsh Health Circular WHC/2022/022 (The role of the Community Dental Service).

The post-holder will be responsible for providing clinical dental care at consultant level and leadership in the sphere of Paediatric Dentistry. The post-holder, in conjunction with the Clinical Lead, will take a clinical leadership role in further developing Paediatric Dentistry within the Community Dental Service and will be responsible for the provision of advanced clinical dental care for children with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, mental health problems, medically compromising conditions, severe anxiety or phobias and other disabilities or conditions which directly or indirectly affect oral health.

The post is based on 6 sessions a week including 5 Direct Clinical Care Sessions and one session to Support Personal Professional Activity.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be the Health Board's internal clinical expert and reference point for paediatric dental services and will work with the Clinical Lead and Operational Manager to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.

Reporting professionally to the Associate Medical Director for Dental, the post-holder will assist with any clinical matters relating to paediatric dentistry and undertake duties as delegated by the Clinical Lead. The post-holder will also attend relevant external and internal clinical networks. Where necessary, the post-holder may be involved in initiating and maintaining such networks.

The Consultant will be managerially responsible to the Clinical Lead and will assist, as required, in the day-to-day operational activities of the Community Dental Service. He /she will be expected to take the lead on the delivery of care to paediatric patients and will need to travel between sites as required. The Consultant will also be involved in the development, training and supervision of community dentists.

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full registration with GDC
  • GDC Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry (or eligible for CCST within 6 months of the date of interview)
  • On the Dental Performers List or eligible for entry
Clinical Experience
  • Paediatric Dental Specialist
  • Broad based experience of providing dental care for paediatrics using a range of patient management techniques including sedation and general anaesthesia.
  • Can demonstrate competencies in Paediatric dentistry to a high standard
  • Recent experience in treating children with complex medical problems
  • Evidence of recent clinical experience for at least 5 years in area of paediatric / special care dentistry
  • Wide experience of CDS/HDS/GDS
  • Experience in various methods of pain and anxiety management
  • Experience in teaching / examining experience
  • Management experience in Dentistry
  • Evidence of member of professional organisation relevant to paediatric dentistry
Clinical Governance
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving clinical practice
  • Evidence of participation in Quality and Patient Safety activities that includes audit, peer review, reflective learning etc
  • Knowledge of Risk Management
  • Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process
Research
  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence so as to improve clinical outcomes
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication
Teaching
  • Willingness to support colleagues that wish to gain further skills in the speciality
  • Evidence of organising teaching programmes and teaching
Management
  • Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS
  • Evidence of management training
