An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) to join a dynamic, well-established team of consultant colleagues based in County Londonderry.

This replacement post is intended to attract a broadly skilled, adaptable OMFS Consultant to support core service requirements, elective and trauma operating, outpatient clinics, waiting list initiatives, and emergency care. The appointee will join a collaborative team providing comprehensive OMFS, facial trauma, orthognathic care, and skin cancer services to the regional population.

While the principal requirement is for a broad general OMFS surgeon, competence or a special interest in the assessment and review of Head & Neck oncology patients within a multidisciplinary team (MDT) framework is highly desirable. Candidates will also have the option to contribute to regional orthognathic services if desired.

Key Duties & Clinical Responsibilities
  • Clinical Care: Provide continuous, high-quality care for inpatients, day cases, and outpatients across the full spectrum of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Medicine.

  • Core Specialty Services: Contribute collaboratively to dentoalveolar surgery, facial trauma management, oral medicine, facial deformity/orthognathic care, and skin cancer activity.

  • Head & Neck Oncology: Contribute to the clinical assessment, review, and follow-up of Head & Neck oncology patients within established multidisciplinary team (MDT) and clinical governance pathways where competent.

  • Outpatient & Theatre Capacity: Actively participate in outpatient clinics, minor surgery, and inpatient operating lists, assisting with waiting-list management and clinical backlogs.

  • Emergency & On-Call Commitment: Participate in the senior OMFS on-call rota on an agreed 1:4 frequency (Category A, 8% on-call supplement) with prospective cover.

  • Teaching & Training: Supervise, mentor, and teach undergraduate medical/dental students and postgraduate junior doctors / Dental Core Trainees (DCTs).

  • Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement: Take an active part in clinical audit, quality improvement projects, service redesign, and mortality/morbidity reviews in line with statutory and clinical governance frameworks.

Proposed Job Plan (Indicative - 11.25 PAs Total)

The final job plan will be agreed with the Clinical Director/Medical Director upon appointment.

  • Direct Clinical Care (DCC): 7.25 PAs

  • Supporting Professional Activities (SPA): 1.0 PA (with Trust expectation of up to 1.5 SPAs / 6 hours negotiated across the job plan)

  • On-Call / Emergency Work: 3.0 PAs (0.5 predictable / 2.5 unpredictable)

Indicative Weekly Timetable:
