Consultant in Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine (Substantive) - Two Posts

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) in partnership with North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust (NMUH)

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for two substantive Consultant posts in Obstetrics with a Subspecialty Interest in Fetal Medicine, supporting the high quality maternity and specialist fetal medicine services across North Central London.

These opportunities are for clinicians with recognised subspecialty training in Fetal Medicine to join a well established, progressive multidisciplinary team delivering both specialist and general obstetric care.

Posts available:

  • Post 1: Consultant in Obstetrics with Subspecialty Interest in Fetal Medicine - primary Fetal Medicine Unit (FMU) sessions based at UCLH.
  • Post 2: Consultant in Obstetrics with Subspecialty Interest in Fetal Medicine - primary FMU sessions (one day per week) based at North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH).

Main duties of the job
  • Deliver high quality consultant led general obstetric care, including labour ward and antenatal services.
  • Participate in consultant on call rotas, including out of hours and weekend working.
  • Provide specialist Fetal Medicine clinics, ultrasound, and invasive procedures as appropriate.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings and complex case management.
  • Support service development, quality improvement, and pathway redesign.
  • Contribute to teaching, training, and supervision of trainees and allied staff.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, and research.
  • Work collaboratively across UCLH and NMUH sites.

Job plans will be agreed in line with service needs and individual expertise and will support continuing professional development.

Person Specification

Applicants must:

  • Be eligible for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (or within 6 months of CCT at interview).
  • Hold recognised subspecialty training/accreditation in Fetal and Maternal Medicine (or be near completion).
  • Demonstrate strong experience in both general obstetrics and specialist fetal medicine.
  • Show excellent clinical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrate commitment to patient centred care and multidisciplinary working.
  • Provide evidence of engagement in teaching, research, audit, and service improvement.
Knowledge and Qualifications
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise.
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of AAC).
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of AAC.
  • RCOG accredited subspecialty training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine (or equivalent).
  • Postgraduate teaching qualification.
  • An interest in intrapartum, obstetric or fetal medicine research.
Experience
  • Clinical training and experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology equivalent to that required of a UK CCST.
  • Clinical training and experience in Fetal medicine.
  • Excellent clinical skills in intrapartum care.
  • Excellent teaching and training ability.
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
  • Experience in research/innovations in maternity.
  • Experience in the management of diabetes in pregnancy.
  • Experience of serious incidents investigations.
  • Experience of PMRT panels.
Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent practical skills in the full range of obstetric and fetal medicine clinical problems.
  • Proven ability to manage delivery suite.
  • Good understanding of fetal medicine guidelines and practice.
  • Good understanding of the management of medical conditions in pregnancy.
  • Leadership skills to take forward service developments.
  • Good organisational and management skills.
  • Ability to act within the clinical Governance framework of the NHS.
  • Computing and IT skills.
  • Evidence of management and administration experience.
Communication
  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen and negotiate with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
  • Ability to work with other teams within the Trust.
  • Ability to see patients as people, empathy and cooperation with others.

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 a year + London weighting (on call Cat A 3%)
