Consultant in Medical Psychotherapy and Liaison Psychiatry

Medical Psychotherapy Tutor: The postholder will be responsible for the organisation, delivery and governance of psychotherapy training for trainees in psychiatry placed with CWPT, working in collaboration with the Director of Medical Education and other key stakeholders.

Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist : The service accepts referrals of patients of all ages over 17. The Consultant will be based at Warwick Hospital for the psychotherapy work but there will be an expectation that the consultant will work flexibly across the following acute sites: University Hospital Coventry (UHCW) -1250 beds, George Elliot Hospital (GEH) - 352 beds, South Warwick Hospital (SWFT) - 350 beds, Central England Rehabilitation Unit, St Cross Hospital and other community hospitals in the catchment area when required.

Medical Psychotherapy Tutor

The post holder will:

Ensure that all core trainees have the opportunity to complete the psychotherapy requirements of the core curriculum.

Advise and support core and higher trainees in their learning by reviewing progress in psychotherapy.

Oversee the establishment and running of the core trainee Balint or case based discussion group(s.

Job responsibilities

The MHLT sees on average 7000 patients annually, which equates to around 19 patients per day on average. Consultant opinion is requested to see around 4 patients per working day, the workload for which is divided between the available consultants each morning in the medic handover meeting (usually 2 - 4 consultants working each day). This equates to around 25 new assessments per month per WTE Consultant.

There are 1-2 requests per month to see an older adult patient in St Cross Hospital Rugby for an opinion. Mental health act assessments in the acute hospitals will not be renumerated as it falls within core duties but additional assessments outside core duties will be additionally renumerated

Objectives of the service are to provide effective liaison between service providers in the Mental Health Trust and the Acute Hospital Trusts. The team will provide effective liaison between the Mental Health services and emergency departments, acute inpatient wards and elderly care wards and provide medical leadership and clinical supervision for the Liaison Team.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of obtaining CCT.
  • Approved Clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
