Consultant in Medical Oncology Breast and Thoracic Cancers

We are currently seeking a full time Medical Oncologist Consultant with an interest in breast and thoracic cancers to be based in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd while undertaking some clinics within Wrexham Maelor Hospital. This post is a replacement appointment which attracts 10 programmed activities and an on call payment. Newly qualified consultants will be offered 3 SPA's as standard. Applications are welcome from those who wish to work full or part time.
BCUHB has 3 cancer centres consisting of a team of 23 Consultants (11 clinical and 12 medical) providing care to the population of North Wales. We take pride in delivering exceptional care through multi professional collaboration, ensuring patients are supported throughout their journey.
The successful candidate will be based in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd within the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre (NWCTC) but will also undertake clinics in Wrexham Maelor Hospital within the Shooting Star Unit. The appointee will have an on call commitment at the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd on a 1 in 8 basis.
Beyond clinical duties, there are opportunities to contribute to education and research as well as leadership functions.
Main duties of the jobKey tasks:
- To provide specialist oncological services to the population served with special reference to the common cancers and agreed appropriate oncology subspecialties and to be an active participant in each of these multidisciplinary teams.
- To work closely with clinical consultant colleagues and to provide seamless cancer care for all patients.
- To work closely with colleagues in other divisions to assist in providing an efficient service for patients transferring between the different disciplines and during the patient journey.
- To liaise with colleagues in Oncology, Haematology and Palliative Care to provide inpatient cover for oncology patients.
- To develop a site specialist and research interest. This will include developing clinical research and entering patients into appropriate national and international studies.
- To develop and participate in collaborative initiatives, having a high regard for clinical effectiveness and the practice of evidence based medicine.
- To participate in audit and teaching and to have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).

Person Specification Qualifications and Experience- Full GMC Specialist Registration or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview
- MB ChB or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- Appropriate experience in training grade posts at SpR/SR level
- Higher Degree
- Participating in and leading multidisciplinary teams
- Experience in teaching, clinical audit
- Ability to gain confidence and trust
- Ability to cope with pressure
- Ability to respond to change
- Ability to educate and train junior medical staff
- Ability to travel between sites for peripheral clinics
- Leadership skills appropriate to directing and teaching medical, nursing and other professions allied to medicine
- Published research
- Actively encourages research with junior and other staff
- Commitment to personal development and medical education
- Ability to travel when required to meet the needs of the service
- Ability to be flexible in response to the changing needs of the service
- Ability to speak Welsh or demonstrate a willingness to learn
