Consultant in Emergency Medicine, UHND

The Urgent and Emergency Care team at UHND comprises ED, SDEC and AMU. Significant changes to the Front of House, including the addition of Same Day Emergency Care and an expansion of the medical workforce, create an attractive place to work for clinicians, managers and patients who value true teamwork.

We invite applications for consultants in Emergency Medicine to join a dynamic, established team who lead from the frontline. You will work alongside experienced middle grade staff and a skilled nursing team to provide outstanding 24 hour care.

This role is ideal for candidates with a proven track record of commitment to education. We welcome applicants with a special interest and will support this wherever possible, in line with our aim to become Employer of Choice. Temporary Additional PAs will also be considered.

Main duties of the job

Provide Emergency Medicine services at University Hospital North Durham. Responsibilities include:

  • Deliver a comprehensive clinical service in partnership with consultant colleagues.
  • Maintain a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in charge.
  • Work with colleagues to plan future developments of the services.
  • Supervise and assist junior and middle grade medical staff and Emergency Nurse Practitioners.
  • Act as Team Leader in resuscitation of seriously traumatised patients and those with critical illness.
  • Conduct review clinics.
  • Provide consultant presence daily in line with the job plan.
  • Offer advice over the telephone or attend the department when on call on a 1 in 8 basis.
  • Participate in the senior doctor rota, performing clinical duties and acting as medical co ordinator.
  • Assist in the integration of the Emergency Department and Urgent Care services.
Additional responsibilities

Applicants trained in Paediatric Emergency Medicine will participate in the future development of a front of house paediatric service. Further duties include strategic service planning, accountability to the Care Group Clinical Director, participation in the on call rota, and coverage when colleagues are on leave.

Research activities inherent to clinical duties are encouraged. Limited research funding may be available through the local research and development committee.

Administrative duties include attending Care Group and departmental meetings, contributing to smooth service running, and sharing responsibilities with other consultants.

Professional supervision of junior staff to maintain care standards, postgraduate teaching of medical staff, undergraduates, and other grades, is required.

Responsibilities also cover CPD, clinical audit participation, providing statements for patient claims, maintaining high clinical standards, day to day ED management, clinical governance and audit, and risk management.

Person Specification Experience
  • Experience in Emergency Medicine.
  • Familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices.
  • Experience supervising, training and teaching trainees.
  • Evidence of career planning through the appraisal process.
  • Clear evidence of professional development at all career stages.
  • Published research or audit.
  • Instructor on GIC/ATLS/ALS/APLS or equivalent.
  • Experienced instructor in simulation based training.
  • RITA C/ARCP outcome 1 at annual appraisals during specialty training or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a primary care environment.
  • Experience providing pre hospital care.
  • Experience in critical care or acute medicine at a registrar/specialist trainee level.
Special Skills & Knowledge
  • Good clinical skills in acute medical admissions.
  • Ability to care for patients with head injury not requiring neurosurgical intervention.
  • Expert clinical opinion across a range of problems within the service.
  • Understanding and conducting audit.
  • Ability to solve problems and make timely decisions under pressure.
  • Competence in using IT to enhance patient care.
  • Completion of Medical ALS and MIMMS.
  • Use of evidence based clinical decision making.
  • Demonstrable experience in one or more subspecialty areas of Emergency Medicine.
  • Experience using CPAP or non invasive ventilation.
Qualifications
  • MB ChB or equivalent.
  • FRCEM or equivalent.
  • PMETB Approval.
  • Completion of ALS, ATLS, ETC, APLS or EPALS with certification in date.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Paediatrics (especially Paediatric Emergency Medicine), Geriatric Medicine or General Practice.
  • Certificate of medical education or equivalent.
  • Completion of instructor course.
Statutory Registration
  • Full and specialist registration with the GMC and Licence to Practice.
  • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within 6 months of attaining CCT in Specialty at interview.
  • Full Registration with the GMC and evidence of compliance with Good Medical Practice standards.
Special Requirements
  • Management Experience.
  • Awareness of the managerial role of a NHS consultant.
  • Evidence of NHS management skills and ability to organise and prioritise work.
  • Capability to delegate appropriately to trainees/non consultants.

£113,565 to £150,569 per year (YC72 Pay Scale), pro rata.
