Consultant in Emergency Medicine subspecialty in Paediatric Emergency

We are looking for an enthusiastic Emergency Medicine Consultant with sub speciality paediatric qualification to work at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. This role involves delivering front line care in a designated trauma unit and contributing to the design of a new Emergency Centre.

The main aim is to work with senior medical and nursing staff to provide first class Emergency Medicine services for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales.

Main duties of the job
  • The post-holder will join the Consultant rota and provide clinical care, supervision and teaching of junior medical and nursing staff.
  • All ED Consultants take a share of the management and administrative workload of both departments, including planning and service development.
  • Support the development of Paediatric Emergency services across both sites and participate in the creation of treatment protocols and guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with paediatric colleagues and engage in regular clinical meetings and postgraduate activities.
  • Participate in the on call rota to ensure appropriate Emergency services are available outside normal working hours.
Job responsibilities

A formal job plan will be agreed within 3 months of starting, reviewed annually and based on a 10 PA working week. It will outline duties, responsibilities, teaching, research, and managerial roles.

For a full time contract:

  • 7.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) - Direct Clinical Care, including clinical activity and emergency work.
  • 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) - CPD, audit, teaching and research.

Part time candidates will have a job plan proportionate to their commitment. Adjustments may be made following diary reviews and service demands.

Person Specification - Entry Criteria
  • Ability to teach clinical skills and deliver lectures on speciality.
  • Broad clinical experience within Emergency Medicine.
  • Recognised ability to work within and lead a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to clinical risk management and understanding of Clinical Governance.
  • Effective communication with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT, CESR or Portfolio Pathway.
  • Experience supervising, appraising, coaching and mentoring trainees and other doctors.
  • Experience in clinical undergraduate/postgraduate teaching.
  • Experience in NHS management.
Qualifications
  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
  • FRCEM or equivalent.
  • ALS or equivalent certification.
  • ATLS or equivalent certification.
  • APLS certification.
  • Level 3 Safeguarding Children training (within the last 3 years).
  • Additional teaching qualification.
  • Additional leadership qualification.
