We are looking for an enthusiastic Paediatric EM consultant to join our team and support the further development of our well established Children's emergency department at the Worthing hospital, University Hospitals Sussex NHS FT. Paediatric emergency department is co located with adult emergency department and the newly constructed urgent treatment centre. The paediatric emergency department receives approximately 25,000 patients per year and is a modern, specialised unit with a dedicated and caring staffing team.
Our department is designed with a child-centric approach to reduce anxiety and stress and includes a dedicated children's waiting area. Feedback from parents generally describe a positive experience with a particular praise for compassionate care and child-friendly atmosphere.
This is an innovative post for an individual looking to develop their role in a dynamic and well equipped emergency department.
Main duties of the jobThe role of the appointed consultant is to be a committed member of the team striving to improve and deliver good patient care for adults and children responding to the ongoing challenges in Emergency Medicine. The post-holder would be expected to joint lead the delivery of care and training for the paediatric Emergency Department

Job responsibilitiesThe appointee in conjunction with the team will be responsible for ensuring the effective organisation of:
- The triage, resuscitation, diagnosis and emergency treatment of all patients presenting to the Emergency Department. Initial treatment carried out on patients requiring admission or follow-up in the hospital should be in accordance with agreed policies and protocols. The ongoing care of patients admitted to CDU and those with mental health presentation waiting in the department.
- Patients referred to specialist teams within the hospital are the responsibility of that specialist team. However, the medical staff of the Emergency Department are responsible for any emergency care necessary until the arrival of a member of the specialist team, including GP referred patients requiring immediate resuscitation.
- The appropriate discharge or referral of patients with adequate communication and follow up.
- The direct clinical supervision, training and support of all staff working in the Emergency Department, as well as the organisation and delegation of clinical work. Knowledge of national and local guidelines should be utilised and shared for the emergency treatment of patients.
- The governance of clinical care including responding to complaints, incident reporting, investigations and results reporting.
- Awareness of Major Incident procedures as relevant to Emergency Medicine.
- Leadership and training for the paediatric Emergency department including supervision of ST3 and PEM trainees; paediatric focussed teaching and training for all ED staff; governance with review of complaints, significant events, datix; review and implementation of guidelines, quality improvement project and audits; liaison with paediatrics, safeguarding, CAMHS, SORT and relevant specialty teams caring for children; debriefing critical incidents; promoting quality of care for children as outlined in national guidance.
- Medical Degree
- FRCEM or recognised equivalent
- CCT in Emergency medicine with subspecialty accreditation in PEM
- Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC or be eligible for registration within six months of the interview. If you trained in the UK, you must also have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Emergency Medicine with sub specialty accreditation in PEM or be within six months of receiving it by the interview date. If you trained outside the UK, you must provide evidence that your qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT. (Equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
- Instructor on APLS/EPLS
- PG Cert in Education or equivalent
- Higher Degree
- Clinical skills/experience across the breadth of RCEM curriculum
- ATLS/ETC, ALS, APLS/EPLS or equivalent
- Evidence of having undertaken own development to improve understanding of equalities issues.
- Postgraduate experience or experience in other related specialties
- Breadth of experience in QIP and clinical audit including supervision of junior staff
- Debrief training
- Knowledge and use of evidence based practice
- Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints
- Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching
- Evidence of managerial skills: Achievements / Course attended
- Breadth of experience in and outside specialty
- Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching
- Recognised teaching qualification
- Evidence of participation in audit
