Job Description
Consultant in Emergency Medicine

The appointed Consultant will be clinically responsible for:

  • Consultant sign off for RCEM designated conditions.
  • Senior clinical input in complex or serious cases in the ED.
  • Risk management and addressing capacity issues in the department, liaising with the management team and mobilising other specialty teams as per policy.
  • Leading the safe disposition of patients in the ED for longer than desired periods.
  • Mitigating the effects of exit block in the department while solutions are sought hospital wide to improve flow.
  • Following departmental roles and responsibilities to facilitate work in different ED areas.

All consultants are expected to participate in the on call rota and to commit to lifelong learning by producing and maintaining a Personal Development Plan and Job Plan in agreement with the Clinical Director.

Main duties of the job

The Emergency Care Centre comprises the following areas:

  • Adult Majors 1 Assessment Area - 16 cubicles
  • Adult Majors 2 Assessment Area (for ambulant patients) - 10 cubicles
  • Children's Emergency Centre - 8 cubicles including HDU bay
  • Clinical Decisions Area - 6 beds and a seated area
  • An Urgent Care Centre at Wigan and Leigh
  • Separate areas for ambulance and walk in triage
Job responsibilities
  • Maintain the highest clinical standards in emergency medicine.
  • Adhere to professional requirements of annual appraisal, job planning and performance reviews.
  • Demonstrate the professional values and behaviours set out in Good Medical Practice.
  • Provide safe and effective care for critically ill patients of all ages with specialist help and guidance.
  • Lead resuscitation teams and safely transfer critically ill patients.
  • Evaluate and initiate the management of safeguarding concerns.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.
  • Training and experience equivalent to UK CCT.
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register in Emergency Medicine or within six months of CCT date at interview.
  • ATLS/ETC, APLS, ALS provider.
  • Ultrasound trained.
  • ATLS/ETC, APLS, ALS instructor.
Experience and Achievements
  • Broad experience in Emergency Medicine in the UK including paediatric EM.
  • Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.
  • Evidence of audit work that has brought about change.
  • Evidence of original research.
  • Evidence of personal practice in all areas described by the RCEM curriculum for a Consultant, including all implied clinical management responsibilities.
  • Experience of using evidence to support decision making.
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit.
  • Experience of demonstrating clinical procedures/techniques to other healthcare professionals.
  • Advanced airway management training.
  • Experience managing an Emergency Department within the last three years.
  • Experience as a Clinical Team Leader.
Skills
  • Ability to lead and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
  • Flexible attitude with a polite and professional manner.

  • Understanding of NHS resources and resource management.
