The South West Thames Centre for Genomics is based at St George's Hospital in Tooting and provides an integrated clinical and genetic laboratory service to a population of 4 million across South West London, Surrey and Sussex.

Key responsibilities

The post-holder will join this supportive and innovative team and take shared responsibility for cancer genetics referrals to clinics at St. Georges University Hospital and around the SW Thames region. The post-holder can develop their own specialist interest commensurate with departmental requirements and will be offered the opportunity to lead on specialist cancer services to support and enhance their continuing professional development and career aspirations. There will be opportunities for working across trusts to facilitate mainstreaming of genomic medicine. The post is for 10 PAs, divided between Direct Clinical Care and Supporting Professional Activities according to the requirements of the post holder and Trust. The post holder will also be expected to provide training for junior colleagues and support the Genetics Counsellors with review and management of complex cases.

Person Specification Qualifications and Training
  • Full registration with GMC
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • On GMC specialist register or within six months of CCT in Clinical Genetics at date of interview
  • Higher degree in preparation or awarded.
Experience
  • Ability to take full and independent clinical responsibility.
  • Thorough general training within all aspects of clinical genetics including paediatric genetics.
  • Active participation in clinical audit.
  • Relevant publication(s) in peer reviewed medical journal(s).
  • Evidence of a specialist interest in a field of medical genetics
Skills
  • Ability to advise on the efficient and smooth running of a specialist service.
  • Ability to organise and manage.
  • A good understanding of audit.
Knowledge
  • Interest in and commitment to research and teaching.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Flexible
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Caring attitude to patients.
  • Professional attitude towards work, reliable, good record of attendance and tidy personal appearance.
  • Commitment to continuing medical education.
  • Reside within a reasonable travelling distance to St George's Hospital SW17, during the working week.
  • Registration with a medical defence organisation for insurance and indemnity.
Teaching
  • Experience in training, teaching and assessing undergraduate medical students
  • Evidence of maintaining and or updating teaching skills
  • A Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education or equivalent qualification
  • Active participation in teaching at post-graduate level.

£113,565 to £150,569 a year per annum pro rata
