Main duties of the jobThe post provides on-call groups at John Radcliffe Hospital, the Nuffield Orthopaedics Centre and the Churchill Hospital. These replacement posts follow retirements. They suit anaesthetists seeking a consultant career in a major teaching hospital with expertise in major cancer surgery, complex vascular procedures, major trauma, orthopaedics and plastics trauma surgery. The Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics is one of the largest in the country, known for a friendly, diverse and inclusive team, supported by outstanding surgical colleagues. The department provides comprehensive elective and emergency services for a wide range of surgical and diagnostic specialties.

Job responsibilitiesClinical: The focus is delivery of high-quality anaesthesia for major cancer surgery, complex vascular procedures, major trauma, orthopaedics and plastics trauma surgery. Flexible sessions allow the post-holder to maintain interests in other areas of anaesthesia. Out of hours the post-holders will be on call to provide emergency cover for general surgery, trauma, specialist surgery including vascular procedures, plastics, ENT, stroke thrombectomy and transplantation depending on specialist interests and clinical experience.
Teaching/ResearchOxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital trust; the post-holders are required to participate in teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. This will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. Contributions to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.
Clinical GovernanceThe post-holders will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust and external accrediting bodies.
Personal and Professional DevelopmentThe post-holders must keep fully up-to-date and demonstrate this through Appraisal. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, to support study, postgraduate training activities, CME, and other development needs.
ManagementThe post-holders will work within the Trust's management policies, undertake administrative duties, and run their clinical service under direction, acknowledging finite resources and obtaining prior agreement for changes requiring additional resources.
Person Specification Qualifications/Training- Medical degree FRCA or equivalent
- CCT in Anaesthesia (or equivalent) or within 6 months at the date of interview; advanced training or fellowship in the sub-specialist clinical area
- ALS/ATLS/APLS provider
- Ability to work independently at consultant level and as a team member
- Evidence of decision-making at consultant level and managing complex cases
- Advanced training or fellowship, or equivalent in sub-specialist area
- Evidence of completion of additional training in other relevant sub-specialty
- Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations
- Excellent leadership and ability to lead a clinical team
- Administrative and time management skills
- Knowledge of the NHS and Clinical Networks
- Understanding of working in a regional referral centre
- Strong teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience in teaching and training
- Contribution to clinical governance, risk management and audit
- Research activity
- Training in clinical management
- Experience in implementing change
- Peer-reviewed publications
- Full registration and licence to practise
- Live within 10 miles of the Trust (unless negotiated); full driving licence
