Job overview An opportunity has arisen to join our vibrant and thriving Anaesthetic, Pain Medicine and Critical Care department as a full-time substantive Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain medicine. This is a new post arising from a departmental expansion to address the challenges of the waiting list recovery program.
Applicants will be expected to be on the specialist register for anaesthesia and have completed Stage 3 or Advanced training in pain medicine. FFPMRCA or equivalence is highly desirable.
Applicants are especially welcomed with an additional anaesthetic interest in preoperative assessment, trauma, orthopaedic and regional anaesthesia, obstetrics, emergency anaesthesia, acute pain and ophthalmology.
The successful applicant will join a team of around 46 consultants (including 4 pain consultants and 14 intensivists) and 1 locum consultants in this rapidly expanding department.
Planned AAC Interview Date is Monday 19 May 2025.
Main duties of the job The successful applicant will be expected to work at Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe Hospital and Amersham. The appointee will be expected to undertake a 10.49 PA contract with the opportunity to increase to 11 PA contract. Initially 1.5 SPAs for supporting activities are allocated for new consultants, 1 core SPA to maintain appraisal, revalidation and statutory/mandatory training obligations and 0.5 SPA for initial service or personal development 'investment'.
The pain medicine post will have 2-3 sessions in chronic pain medicine joining 4 consultants, an associate specialist and specialty doctor. The pain sessions will be split between outpatient clinics, outpatient procedure sessions based in Amersham hospital and theatre pain treatments currently based in Wycombe hospital. There is a spinal MDT as well as chronic pain MDT. Consultants are expected engage in teaching of trainees and nurses. Service rearrangements may also occur in the future to include use of theatre or outpatient facilities at Stoke Mandeville.
Job plans are reviewed annually in line with contractual requirements.

Person specification
- MB, BS or equivalent
- FRCA or full equivalence
- FFPMRCA
- CCT holder in Anaesthesia or Registration on GMC specialist Register in Anaesthetics. Or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview.
- General training in Anaesthesia to consultant level or equivalent (at least one year NHS experience)
- Ability to make decisions at Consultant level.
- Evidence of completion of (or equivalent) in Advanced training or Stage 3 in Pain Medicine
- Evidence of completion of (or equivalent) in Advanced training in other desirable anaesthetic subspecialties e.g. obstetrics, pre-operative assessment, regional anaesthesia
- Extensive years WTE
- Post CCT experience
- Management training and experience
- Good personal and interpersonal skills
