Posted 2 hours 24 minutes ago by NHS
Closing date is 02 July 2026.
We are a department of 60 consultants and 16 SAS doctors and are now looking for new consultants to join our dynamic and rapidly evolving anaesthetic & chronic pain team at York & Scarborough NHS Foundation Trust. Within the Trust we are part of the Surgery Care Group, which includes most surgical specialties.
At York Hospital there are 12 operating theatres in our main suite. We have a dedicated day unit with 6 theatres and an ophthalmology operating area with two theatres. These are supported by two Post Anaesthetic Care Units. There are also two separate obstetric theatres. Surgical services currently supported include general surgery (including colorectal and upper GI), orthopaedics and trauma, obstetrics and gynaecology, ENT, maxillo facial, oral surgery, ophthalmology, urology and vascular. Enhanced recovery programmes are well advanced in colorectal and orthopaedic surgery and are being rolled out in other specialties. Pre operative assessment sessions are provided as well as a full nurse led pre assessment service. We also have a well established and highly regarded peri operative programme running alongside our successful CPX service. We have a 22 bedded Critical Care Unit on York site with a further 8 at Scarborough.
At Scarborough Hospital the main theatre suite comprises five theatres, in addition to which there is a separate maternity theatre.
Main duties of the jobThe job plan is a prospective agreement that sets out a consultant's typical working pattern, duties and responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a consultant's professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities and external commitments. Where possible, consultants are given a choice of working over 4 days or 5 days. We may be able to offer flexibility and accommodate other working patterns. The following is a sample job plan 10 PA, worked over 4 days. Individual job plans will be discussed with the post holder prior to appointment and will become operational on commencement.
All job plans are agreed in line with the Trust's Job Planning Principles. Additional programmed activities may be offered to the post holder, up to a maximum of 2 for full time posts, taking the maximum total to 12. Any offer of additional programmed activities will be based on the needs of the service. A core 1.25 PAs of SPA time is provided per week for consultant and SAS grades to ensure ongoing core professional development and QI work. There is opportunity to increase this amount where need arises. We have opportunities to explore teaching, research, appraisal, leadership roles and quality improvement projects to enhance our service. We strive to support your development, ensuring SPA is allocated within your job plan to achieve this.
