Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon

The Head & Neck and Thyroid Unit provide a high quality and accessible cancer service predominantly for the people of South London although referrals are also received from across England and abroad - for these particular tumour sites. The Unit has a long and distinguished history, particularly in the multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. In providing this service we have forged excellent links with the St George's Hospital who partner us in this. The population we serve at The Royal Marsden exceeds 2 million and draws from a number of peripheral hospitals, some which hold joint consultant contracts with The Royal Marsden, all of which are members of The Royal Marsden multidisciplinary team. All colleagues within the MDT are well supported. This helps to facilitate efficient patient pathways from diagnosis to treatment across the network. The spoke institutions comprise Croydon NHS Trust; Epsom and St. Helier NHS Trust; Kingston NHS Trust; St George's Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital and Ashford and St. Peter's NHS Trust. Whilst the bulk of the head and neck workload is represented by mucosal squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract, the MDT also manages patients with malignant salivary gland disease, head and neck non-melanoma skin malignancy, paranasal sinus malignancy and thyroid malignancy.
Main duties of the job- To contribute to a first-class service in Head and Neck Surgery, including the outpatient and inpatient management of patients, with especial focus on patients with oral and maxillofacial malignancies and recurrent cancers.
- To participate in inpatient ward rounds as required by the service including Chelsea and Sutton (on-call cover)
- To be integral within the MDT to plan integration of treatments with radiotherapy and chemotherapy
- To develop a head and neck complex resective and reconstructive surgery program
- To provide support to other clinical units pertaining to treatment pathways such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy as appropriate
- To contribute to the out of hours Airway Consultant on-call rota and cross cover in conjunction with other consultant colleagues, and as required in support of junior colleagues.
- To contribute to the clinical governance work undertaken in the department building on standards of best practice. This will include participation in audit, CPD and other activities associated with Clinical and Research Governance as required by the Trust and/or by The Royal College.
- To contribute to the strategic direction of the head and neck service within the Trust in conjunction with other staff in the Department and in line with local and national strategic guidance.
- To initiate, conduct, maintain governance and publish clinical trials carried in the Unit, and to develop a portfolio of pertinent clinical trials.

Person specification Status- Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
- Subspeciality training / experience in Head & Neck Oncology with specialist interest in oral and maxillofacial surgery
- Higher Degree
- Evidence of national / international speaking at conferences
- Motivated to ensure the achievement of defined targets
- Organisation of education and training of junior doctors and/or undergraduates
- Have completed a 'train the trainers' course
- Extensive academic experience in the relevant field
- Management Experience
- Head & Neck robotic surgery experience

Flu Vaccination - What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
