Consultant Haematologist (Clinical & Laboratory)
Consultant Haematologist (Clinical And Laboratory) University Hospital Kerry for 33 hours per week and Cork University Hospital for 4 hours per week.
This is an appointment to the HSE South West on a Public Only Consultants Contract by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to University Hospital Kerry for 33 hours per week and Cork University Hospital for 4 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganization of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE's National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
Main Duties of the JobThis post allows for further strengthening of laboratory and clinical haematology services and governance at UHK. The post-holder will join his/her colleague in developing the local clinical haematology care at UHK and linking with colleagues in CUH. Sustainable haematology and blood transfusion governance of UHK is a legal requirement and is currently provided by the single consultant haematologist. The post-holder and his/her colleague will rotate the role of Laboratory Director in UHK as required, working with other assigned pathologists in oversight and development of the range of laboratory services.
The successful post holder will be considered an integral member of the Consultant Team at both UHK and CUH, and will be integrated at both sites clinically, academically and from a laboratory perspective.
Clinical and Laboratory:
The post holder will provide general haematology laboratory and clinical services at UHK and with provision for accommodation of a subspecialty interest (ideally locally in UHK if appropriate). Accordingly, it is expected that some meetings will be linked directly to CUH which will see the post holder spending approx. one fifth of their time in CUH in person or virtually. The CUH team will continue to provide care to highly complex patients - acute leukaemia services, high grade lymphoma, young CLL, transplant eligible patients and accept sick/high intensity referrals from UHK.
Specifically, this post will enable the team of haematologists to progress to adequate, sustainable haematology and blood transfusion governance of UHK (a legal requirement). The post-holder will be supported by the existing post-holder at UHK as well as CUH colleagues to ensure that SSWHG regional resources are economically deployed across the region. Haematology could serve as a model for other pathology disciplines once this is embedded and audited. The post-holder and his/her colleague will rotate the role of Laboratory Director in UHK as required, working with other assigned pathologists in oversight of the range of laboratory services. Workload within the laboratory will significantly increase as a result of the appointment of haematologists. The post-holder will contribute to the introduction of new tests and support the additional laboratory staff required to perform these tests. This work will support the diagnostic -mostly cancer related work- that the post holder will be carrying out.

Information about the organisationHaematology is structured as a model of interconnected service between Cork University Hospital as the Model 4 hub and University Hospital Kerry as a Model 3 hospital within the SSWHG. Haematology services at UHK have historically been predominantly laboratory-based with limited on-site presence and clinical specialist care delivered through CUH.
This post is the second of two consultant haematologist posts based at UHK, with a specific link to CUH for CME and multi-disciplinary meetings. The first consultant post at UHK was filled in 2021 and the on-site daily clinical service has commenced with GP and inpatient consults, followed by progression to outpatients and day case procedures / transfusions. Together, these two posts will allow for the robust development of an on-site clinical haematology service at UHK while retaining links to the Model 4 hub for onward referral as required.
