We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and dynamic Consultant to join our friendly Care of the Elderly team, to develop and expand our geriatric services.
We believe the job plan offers flexibility to develop this service within departmental and Trust objectives. Newly appointed consultants will have the opportunity for mentorship from experienced geriatricians. The Trust is a Major Trauma Centre, and support will be available from geriatricians involved in the Major Trauma pathway, though you will not be responsible for major trauma patients. You will be encouraged to join our highly-rated consultant leadership and management training program.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder will provide clinical and managerial leadership to an acute elderly care ward. You will also develop a subspecialty area of interest (e.g., liaison geriatrics, community, frailty). Key duties include:
- Providing direct input to an elderly medicine ward, with ongoing commitment to inpatient care, supervision of junior doctors.
- Carrying out general geriatrics, falls, specialty, or 'hot' clinics, with opportunities to develop subspecialty clinics (e.g., continence, frailty, dementia).
- Participating in the General (Internal) Medicine 1:18 consultant on-call rota at Royal Preston Hospital, including ward rounds.
- Developing services to reflect priorities within available resources.
- Leading the development of protocols, guidelines, and practices related to elderly care.
- Leading audit and quality improvement activities, and participating in clinical governance meetings.
- Engaging in annual appraisal, Continuing Professional Development, and Revalidation processes.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major acute Trust in North West England, with 1,270 beds serving a regional population of 1.5 million. We are the tertiary centre for major trauma, neuro-sciences, renal, oncology, and plastic surgery/burns. We offer opportunities for research and development, and undergraduate teaching since 2003.

Person specification Qualifications- Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
- MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- On the GMC specialist register (geriatric medicine) or within six months of admission (UK training program)
- MSc or PhD
- Extensive experience in Acute and General Medicine
- Experience in medical education
