Role: Consultant

This is a new Consultant post within the Gastroenterology department, with a specific focus on Hepatobiliary Endoscopy and Medicine.

The post holder will work within the multi-disciplinary team to provide and develop care for Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Medicine. The appointee will contribute to existing strengths and develop his/her own areas of expertise according to interests, ability and experience. The role includes teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job

All staff may be required to work at any of the Trust's sites as needed. As a senior employee you will work in close cooperation with clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues to provide high quality care. Responsibilities include:

  1. The provision of a first-class clinical service

  3. Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King's College London / King's Health Partners
  4. Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies
  5. Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's service plans
  6. Maintaining confidence in business plans and development strategies for the specialty, Care Group or Trust

Detailed job description and main responsibilities Key duties and responsibilities
  1. Provide high-quality care to patients with responsibilities for all aspects of treatment and related management within the Care Group.
  2. Shared responsibility for 24/7 on-call cover for the Unit on a rota basis, including covering colleagues' annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in your contract.
  3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  4. Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties and contribute to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
  5. Attend outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group's management team where part of the service structure.
  6. Contribute to the Care Group's research interests in line with the Trust's R&D framework.
  7. Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance and Learning from Deaths.
  8. Contribute to the Care Group's Business Plan and participate in discussions regarding service plans with internal and external agencies.
  9. Work within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
  10. Provide professional leadership for all staff in the specialty and develop projects to advance professional education and training.
  11. Support productivity and job satisfaction within the specialty; participate in peer and junior colleague appraisal as appropriate.
  12. Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
  13. Be aware of and comply with Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene and environmental standards.
  14. Prepare for and undertake protective interventions in line with evidence-based practice and patient safety.
  15. Support King's commitment to 7-day consultant-led services and contribute accordingly to future developments.

Person specification Qualifications
  • Full MRCP
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
Registration
  • Full Registration with GMC
  • Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of appointment
Training and Experience
  • Wide experience in all aspects of Gastroenterology, including Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent
  • Extensive experience in ERCP and EUS
  • Proven supervisory, coaching and mentoring experience
Administration
  • Experience in day-to-day organisation of Gastroenterology services in a busy Teaching Hospital
  • Proficient with information technology and general computer skills
  • Familiar with current NHS structure and recent initiatives
Management and Leadership
  • Evidence of leadership within multidisciplinary teams
  • Management course and/or qualification
Audit and Quality Improvement
  • Understanding of medical audit principles
  • Experience in completing audit projects

Research and Publications
  • Understanding of clinical research
  • Research experience in Gastroenterology, ideally HPB Medicine
