Consultant Dermatologist

The Department of Dermatology is seeking a dedicated and proactive Consultant to join our team in this 8 PA role. The focus of this post is to deliver high quality general dermatology and surgical services, while providing essential leadership and clinical responsibility to the wider multidisciplinary team. While the post spans both Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals, the heart of the service is located at the Aspen Centre. This state of the art, purpose built facility provides a sophisticated clinical environment, featuring modern consultation suites and specialised minor procedure rooms for advanced skin surgery. With comprehensive treatment and diagnostic facilities on site, this role offers an exceptional opportunity to practise in a setting designed for both clinical excellence and professional growth.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will run outpatient clinics and/or minor ops lists in the Aspen Centre, supported in clinic by their consultant colleagues. The post holder will also work closely with our specialist nurses and will occasionally be required to teach our medical students and other junior staff. To provide, with other consultants in the specialty, routine and emergency dermatology services to the Trust, covering for annual, study and professional leave.

About us

The department provides an range of sub specialty clinics, offering dedicated sessions for eczema, psoriasis, Hidradenitis Suppurativa, hair, nail, vulval and lymphoma, alongside comprehensive patch testing and photo patch testing. The phototherapy service is equally robust, equipped with UVB and PDT machines at the Aspen Centre, with access for patients at Tewkesbury, Cirencester, Stroud and the North Cotswolds. This clinical breadth is supported by an innovative, restructured nursing model, where a consultant's clinical reach is extended by an ACP led team and expert Clinical Nurse Specialists manage surgical procedures, biologic monitoring, breaking bad news and systemic drug oversight. With surgical sessions spanning the picturesque locations, and visiting plastic surgeons providing fortnightly on site support, the role offers a diverse clinical portfolio.

Consultants benefit from a highly collaborative and sophisticated multidisciplinary culture, with weekly specialist MDT meetings, involving OMFS, ENT, Plastic Surgery, Oncology and Pathology to ensure seamless care for complex cancer patients. This approach is enhanced by monthly complex cancer clinics and cases clinics with regular immunosuppression sessions, and a robust paediatric service held across both Cheltenham and Gloucester sites.

Job responsibilities
  • Collaborate and work to maintain dermatology services in line with strategic requirements.
  • Provide, with other consultants in the specialty, routine and emergency dermatology services to the Trust, covering for annual, study and professional leave.
  • Provide consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialties in the Trust.
  • Develop a special interest to complement those of the existing consultants in Dermatology service in accordance with the priorities of the Trust.
  • Take responsibility for the professional supervision and appraisal of junior medical staff, in conjunction with colleagues.
  • Participate in the education and training of junior doctors, medical students, nurses and general practitioners.
  • Participate in the training and assessment of specialist trainees rotating through the department.
  • Liaise with medical staff in other specialties and participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities within the Trust.
  • Provide medical information for the development of systems appropriate for Trust needs.
  • Participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings whilst remaining within the framework of the agreed strategy of the Trust and the Department.
  • Attend other departmental, divisional and Trust meetings as necessary.
  • Attend regional and national meetings as necessary.
  • Undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies.
  • Promote evidence based practice. Respond appropriately to NICE guidance. Change own and others clinical practice in response to new clinical developments.
  • Undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topics.
  • Be involved in risk management and quality assurance.
  • Respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents.
  • The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes.
  • Teach primary care colleagues, GP trainees, junior doctors and medical students, nurses and other paramedical staff in the team in speciality and special interests.
  • The post holder will be immediately accountable to the specialty Clinical Lead and Specialty Director. Further line management is provided by the Chief of Service for medicine and subsequently the Medical Director.
  • Co operate with the commissioning lead on budget issues.
Person Specification Qualifications and Training
  • Full General Medical Council registration.
  • On Specialist Register for General (Internal) Medicine and Generic Medicine via CCT or CESR CP (Combined Programme) (Proposed CCT/CESR CP date must be within 6 months of interview).
  • European Community Rights.
  • Diplomas or postgraduate thesis relevant to the specialty.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems.
  • Ability to supervise junior staff undertaking research projects.
  • Evidence of participation in Audit and Clinical Governance Programmes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other staff and agencies.
