Job Description

We are seeking a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon to join our dynamic and dedicated clinical team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced surgeon who is passionate about delivering high quality patient care, advancing clinical excellence and contributing to the continued development of our surgical services.

The post is a full time (11.75 PA) position in Cardiac Surgery at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. Although no particular surgical specifics are stipulated, the Trust strongly supports potential sub specialty development in line with future advances and requirements.

The appointee is expected to work flexibly. The following work pattern is provisional; the exact weekly timetable will depend on operational issues within the Trust.

About us

The Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides adult cardiothoracic services to residents of Merseyside, North Wales, the Isle of Man and parts of Lancashire and Cheshire, covering a population of approximately 2.9 million people.

The Trust is one of the largest cardiac and thoracic units in the country, capable of performing up to 2,200 heart procedures and 1,500 thoracic procedures each year, including about 700 major thoracic operations.

Our services include thoracic aortic aneurysm care with an annual activity of 150-180 major aortic cases and a dedicated on call service.

Job responsibilities

The role is a full time (11.75 PA) general cardiac surgery post with a 1 in 10 on call rota and Category A frequency payment. The successful candidate will enjoy full secretarial support, a personal computer (training available if required) and office accommodation consistent with other consultants.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering high quality cardiac surgical care with flexibility to accommodate the Trust's operational needs.
  • Participating in research, audit and quality improvement projects and supporting the training of resident doctors.
  • Working within the annual appraisal and GMC revalidation framework and engaging in the Trust's job planning process.
  • Providing mentorship and preceptorship to junior staff as required.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • Entry (or planned entry) on the GMC Specialist Register via Certificate of Completion of Training (proposed CCT date by August 2026) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or European Community Rights.
  • An appropriate higher Cardiothoracic Specialist surgical qualification (FRCS or FECTS) or equivalent.
Clinical Experience
  • Minimum 6 years of cardiothoracic surgery experience.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of cardiac problems in both emergency and elective settings.
  • Capability to take full and independent responsibility for patient clinical care.
  • Willingness to develop clinical skills and lead innovation in line with future unit advances.
Management Experience
  • Evidence of ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists.
  • Ability to manage and lead a surgical firm.
  • Evidence of quality improvement activities.
  • Evidence of completion of a management course.
Teaching Experience
  • Experience of postgraduate teaching, including delivery of teaching in an educational programme.
  • Ability to teach clinical and operative skills (logbook evidence of teaching junior colleagues).
  • Attendance of Training the Trainer course.
  • Experience of supervising higher surgical trainees.
Audit and Research Experience
  • Experience of audit management (completed audit cycle).
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems.
  • Peer reviewed publications.
