These posts would suit anaesthetists seeking to have a consultant career in a major teaching hospital with considerable expertise in major cancer surgery, complex vascular procedures, major trauma, orthopaedics and plastic surgery.

The successful Consultants will join the on call groups of anaesthetists at the John Radcliffe Hospital, the Nuffield Orthopaedics Centre and the Churchill Hospital sites which are part of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics is one of the largest departments in the country. The department is well known for having a friendly, diverse and inclusive team, supported by outstanding surgical colleagues. It provides a comprehensive elective and emergency service for a wide range of surgical and diagnostic specialties.

Main duties of the job

The focus of this post is the delivery of high quality anaesthesia for major cancer surgery, complex vascular procedures, major trauma, orthopaedics and plastics trauma surgery.

Post holders will have flexible sessions to maintain interest and skills in other areas of anaesthesia.

Out of hours the post holders will be on call to provide emergency cover for general surgery, trauma, specialist surgery including vascular procedures, plastics, ENT, stroke thrombectomy and transplantation depending upon their specialist interests and clinical experience.

Job responsibilities

The focus is the delivery of high quality anaesthesia for major cancer surgery, complex vascular procedures, major trauma, orthopaedics and plastics trauma surgery.

Post holders will participate in teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations.

Post handlers will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust and external accrediting bodies.

Post holders will keep fully up to date with their relevant area of practice and demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust through appraisal.

Person Specification Qualifications/Training
  • Medical degree FRCA or equivalent
  • CCT in Anaesthesia (or equivalent) or within 6 months at the date of interview Advanced training or fellowship in the sub specialist clinical area
  • ALS/ATLS/APLS provider
Experience
  • To be able to work independently at consultant level and perform as a member of a team.
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems
  • Advanced training or fellowship, or experience in the sub specialist clinical area.
  • Evidence of completion of additional training in other relevant sub specialty
  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
Skills and knowledge
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital
  • Effective administrative and time management skills
  • Knowledge of the NHS and the role of Clinical Networks
  • Understanding of the complexities of working in a regional referral centre
  • Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
  • Good written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training
  • Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities

  • Full registration and licence to practice
  • To live within 10 miles of the trust (unless negotiated otherwise). Full Driving licence
