About the role

We are seeking a Commercial Contract Specialist to support the Public Sector Sales and Tenders team with managing commercial and legal risks within complex contracts with UK Local Authorities for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure projects.

The role operates in the tender phase of the sales process, with a focus on contract reviews, risk assessment and mitigation.

This role is critical to driving strategic partnerships, securing long-term agreements, and ensuring mutually beneficial outcomes that align with our business objectives and public sector requirements.

This is not a legal role, but a thorough understanding of the legal implications of contracts is essential to deliver a balanced contract review.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the contract review process to ensure contract documents received at point of tender are thoroughly assessed, clarified, and where necessary, supported through pre-award negotiation ensuring agreements align with commercial, regulatory, and strategic business objectives including property interest agreements (leases/licenses).
  • Analyse and interpret legal documents to identify and mitigate contractual risks.
  • Provide advice and recommendations to business partners on potential contractual issues (e.g. insurances, liabilities termination rights, KPIs, SLAs and deliverables).
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with legal, finance, operations, and technical teams to structure contracts that mitigate risks and ensure project feasibility.
  • Ensure compliance with UK public sector procurement regulations, contract law, Local Authority procurement frameworks, funding models and industry best practices.
  • Participate in contract review and approval processes.
  • Craft and propose contract clarification questions to Clients during the tender stage to ensure contracts are robust and fit for purpose.
  • Ensure any modifications to contracts agreed at tender stage are properly documented and aligned with business objectives.
  • Prepare and present contract summaries and reports to SLT.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of all contract negotiations to ensure transparency and accuracy including approval chains.
  • Provide occasional guidance and support in the negotiation of contract renewals in collaboration with Account Managers.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, relevant legislation and market conditions to proactively advise on potential contract-related opportunities or threats.

Desirable Qualifications / Experience

  • Essential: Understanding of contract structures, risk mitigation, and commercial agreements.
  • Preferred: Direct experience with contract law, public procurement regulations, or EV infrastructure agreements.
  • A background in commercial law or contract negotiation / management.
  • Experience of reviewing commercial contracts and identifying risks in public procurement / Local Authority contracts.
  • Familiarity with using framework agreements as the basis for contractual structures.
  • Knowledge of the wider EV industry would be beneficial but not essential.

Skills

  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity in an ever-changing landscape.
  • Well organised with an exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate contract terms, explain complex concepts, and influence stakeholders.
  • Ability to simplify complex legal terminology and provide clear, actionable commercial insights to stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with framework and contract templates, terms, and standard clauses used across the EV industry.
  • Positive, forward-thinking attitude with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritise demands when under deadlines.
  • Flexible and adaptable to change.

Location

The business is currently based in our offices in Southwark, London. The position is full-time hybrid, working a minimum of three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday) in either our London, Cardiff or Edinburgh offices, with flexibility to work from home around that if desired.
