PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We're recruiting a Lawyer to join the BBC Commercial and Technology Legal team, based in London, on a permanent contract. We provide legal advice on UK based transactional matters and some international agreements; all focussed on helping the BBC achieve its public service mission.

As a Lawyer within the BBC C&T Legal team, you will provide robust, expert, legal advice and support on a wide range of matters including sourcing new suppliers, contract lifecycle management and a varied mix of business-as-usual work. You will also lead the legal support on straightforward regulated procurement processes and support senior members of the team on complex ones. You will also get the opportunity to provide support on corporate governance and to our real estate group, often working with senior members of the team and external counsel.

You will often be the legal point of contact for the business stakeholders, providing them with support, guidance and keeping them up to date on how the matter is progressing. You will be responsible for managing your workload and keeping to business and statutory deadlines.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

This is a busy and varied role which will see you providing legal advice across a variety of commercial and technology related agreements and transactions. You will work with a range of personnel at all levels across all business areas of the BBC and its commercial subsidiaries.

The role sits within the BBC Legal Division which is responsible for providing legal advice and assistance across the BBC and for developing and implementing the BBC's legal strategy. The Legal Division is led by the BBC's General Counsel. It is made up of the following departments: General Counsel's Office, Litigation and Information Rights, Intellectual Property, Employment, Programme Legal Advice, Commercial Data Protection and Technology, Distribution and Competition and Regulatory Law.

Our overall structure is similar to that found in private practice firms and we provide advice and support on a wide range of matters. Whilst this means the work can be challenging and fast-paced at times, we are open to hybrid ways of working to support our staff, where appropriate and in line with our flexible working policies.

As a Lawyer within the BBC C&T Legal team, you will:
  • Provide robust, expert, legal advice and support on a wide range of matters including sourcing new suppliers, contract lifecycle management and a varied mix of business as usual work, as well as leading straightforward regulated procurement processes and supporting senior members of the team on complex ones.
  • Show initiative to research new areas of law, applying your analysis to solve problems and provide pragmatic legal advice to support the BBC to achieve its public mission.
  • Be the sole point of contact for providing legal advice across a range of commercial and technology related agreements.
  • Work, often under pressure to meet business or statutory deadlines and enable new suppliers and projects to progress as required, managing conflicting priorities as needed.
  • Provide support to senior members of the team and external counsel on complex matters when required.
  • Build successful, effective working relationships with a range of personnel at all levels across the BBC and its commercial subsidiaries.
  • Be proactive to identify new areas of law which may impact on our team's work and work on creative solutions to help the BBC lead the field.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Fully qualified lawyer or legal executive with a current practising certificate, good academics and a wide range of experience of transactional commercial and technology matters, gained in house with a national or multinational organisation and/or within a leading national or international law firm.
  • Relevant experience and thorough understanding of regulated procurement processes for enterprise services combined with demonstrable experience of leading legal workstreams of regulated procurements.
  • Experience of negotiating and drafting a variety of commercial agreements within the technology, enterprise and/or media industry, having excellent organisational skills to ensure conflicting deadlines are met.
  • Experience of advising clients directly, in person, in virtual meetings and in writing, showing resilience to solve problems whilst under pressure.
  • Demonstrable experience of building relationships across a range of people and providing continuing excellent stakeholder management.

DESIRABLE

  • Experience of corporate governance and company secretarial activities.
  • Experience of enterprise real estate transactions, for example lease renewals or surrenders.

If you can bring some of these skills and experiences, along with transferable strengths, we'd love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.

Before your start date, you may need to disclose any unspent convictions or police charges, in line with our Contracts of Employment policy. This allows us to discuss any support you may need and assess any risks. Failure to disclose may result in the withdrawal of your offer.

Close date is 5 March 2026
