Job summaryWe have an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Specialist Nurse to shape, develop, and be one of the first to join our mental health team at HMP Millsike, a brand new Category B men's prison, located in the village of Full Sutton near York.
HMP Millsike will have an operational capacity of 1500 people who will spend their sentences learning skills for employment on release, as part of the government's drive to reduce reoffending. The prison site is currently under construction, and Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust was recently awarded the Mental Health Service contract to begin delivering services in April 2025.
This is a rare opportunity to be part of a new mental health team at a brand new prison site.
Your clinical expertise and extensive knowledge will support the delivery of mental health services, develop pathways, ensure quality care, and establish clinical governance structures.
You will have extensive experience working within a prison or wider forensic services, a positive and compassion-focused attitude towards service users in a prison environment, and awareness of the clinical challenges faced by individuals in secure settings. The role requires high professional standards, excellent communication, and relationship skills.
Main duties of the jobWe seek an experienced nurse who will work within a multidisciplinary team of professionals to assess, plan, and provide patient care. You will collaborate with Registered Mental Health and Learning Disability Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Primary Care Mental Health Practitioners, and wider partner agencies including primary care, social care, and prison staff.

Person Specification Qualifications/Experience- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (RMN / RNLD / RGN, RNSC - CAMHS only)
- Recognised Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor or in progress
- Trained or in training for Clinical Supervision
- Postgraduate diploma relevant to the area or willing to achieve within 2 years
- Within the first year, hold a qualification in a governed therapy/advanced clinical area (e.g., CBT, Family Therapy, Prescribing)
- Equivalent clinical experience, such as working as a band 6 or above with significant experience and CPD evidence
- Experience working with patients with complex needs and risk behaviors
- Experience in clinical risk assessment and management
- Experience working collaboratively with service users, families, and multi-disciplinary teams
- Engagement in quality improvement activities
- Knowledge of current issues in mental health care, regionally and nationally
- Understanding of legal frameworks like the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
- Knowledge of safeguarding principles and practices
- Experience with clinical risk assessment and management
- Understanding of clinical governance
- Knowledge of medicines management
- Understanding of psychological models of care and treatment
This role is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, requiring a DBS check for any criminal convictions.
