Job Description

An exciting position has arisen for a highly motivated psychologist to join the Insight Team, and Offender Personality Disorder team (OPD) in Greater Manchester.

The Insight Team is a long-standing and well-established service which is run in partnership with Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) and Greater Manchester Probation Service (GMPS). It delivers the core community aspect of the OPD strategy across the Greater Manchester footprint, which involves a consultation and formulation service, joint case work, staff training and workforce development. The Team is made up of multidisciplinary professionals, including psychologists and probation practitioners.

Due to a recent secondment, we have a vacancy for a Band 7 Clinical, Forensic or Counselling Psychologist.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for supporting and delivering the OPD strategy in the community. They will provide consultations, in partnership with a probation colleague, to probation practitioners in specific regional probation delivery units (PDUs) across Greater Manchester. This will include developing formulations and recommendations for the probation staff accessing the service. The aim is to focus on a shared understanding of personality difficulties with the aim of reducing risk and reoffending and improving wellbeing. In addition to this, the post holder will be involved in the development of the workforce through training, supervision, reflective practice and by participating in joint case work opportunities. The post holder will receive training and supervision, including clinical supervision, line management supervision and group reflective practice.

The post is a 12 month fixed term contract. The post would be suitable for a newly qualified practitioner and we would provide a preceptorship package for those new to the role.

Job responsibilities
  • To develop collaborative formulations with Probation Practitioners and support the consultation and formulation process with HMPPS staff, documenting formulations and recommendations as appropriate.
  • To contribute to the multi-professional understanding of service-user presentation and support a psychological and trauma-informed practice.
  • To support the development of psychologically informed ways of working with individual service-users and by supporting staff within the wider establishment.
  • To contribute to the development and delivery of training to staff and other stakeholders.
  • To contribute to reflective practice for HMPPS staff to develop self-awareness or strengths, abilities and limitations.
  • To support the clinical and operational lead with ongoing research and service development opportunities.
  • To participate in clinical and managerial supervision and to engage in appraisal processes.
  • To use reflective practice to develop strong awareness of abilities, strengths and limitations when interacting with others.
Person Specification Qualification
  • Doctoral degree in clinical or forensic psychology
Professional Registration
  • HCPC registration as a clinical or forensic psychologist
Experience
  • Experience of developing assessments, formulations and therapeutic intervention to people presenting with complex mental health, personality difficulties or offending behaviours.
  • Experience of working in a forensic or criminal justice setting
  • Experience of providing consultations to other professionals.
  • Experience of delivering training to other professionals
  • Experience of contributing to service development projects e.g. audits, service evaluation
  • Experience of providing supervision to other professionals
  • Experience of working with other professional groups e.g MDT and/or other professional services e.g. probation service, prison service
Knowledge
  • Knowledge and awareness of the factors that contribute to complex personality presentations, emotional dysregulation and interpersonal difficulties.
  • Knowledge of psychological treatment approaches for working with those presenting with complex personality difficulties.
  • Knowledge of the theories of offending and of desistance.
  • Awareness and understanding of the OPD pathway strategy
  • Knowledge of theories around attachment, trauma informed approaches and relational practice
