Job Description

Role: Gynaecology Nurse Sonographer, part time - permanent. Reference Number: 05.031 (2026).

Overview

The role provides specialist ultrasound care for women with reproductive and gynaecological health needs, combining advanced imaging skills with holistic nursing care. The CNS/cCNS nurse sonographer performs and reports ultrasound scans to assess conditions affecting the female reproductive system, including ovarian cysts or torsions, adnexal masses, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, early pregnancy concerns (e.g., ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage), abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine malignancies and cervical malignancies. The gynaecology nurse sonographer routinely performs both transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound to provide accurate, timely diagnostic information to guide treatment decisions.

Responsibilities
  • General Accountability: maintain patient primacy in hospital activities; ensure patient needs and comfort are prioritized; be accountable for the nursing service in the transvaginal scanning department; work within the scope of practice; comply with hospital policies; demonstrate knowledge of emergency plans; uphold high standards of care aligned with the hospital's mission, vision, values and strategic plan; report to the Assistant Director of Nursing and be professionally accountable to the Director of Nursing.
  • Specific Accountability: provide evidence-based care safely; preserve patient dignity and rights; document and record all scan details; foster nurse-patient relationships; ensure equipment and supplies are checked and available; maintain computerized records in line with policy.
  • Clinical Responsibilities: provide safe patient care; assess needs; develop, implement, evaluate and document care; set and monitor standards; ensure evidence-based protocols are used; communicate with patients and multidisciplinary teams; monitor infection control; uphold health and safety standards; report incidents; maintain cleaning standards.
  • Managerial Responsibilities: maintain confidentiality; attend meetings; liaise with materials management; be familiar with emergency plans; promote open communication; optimize resources and ensure compliance with statutory requirements; manage workload and assist in annual departmental reporting; handle complaints per hospital procedures.

Qualifications

Eligibility pathways apply for Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or Candidate Clinical Nurse Specialist (cCNS) roles. Core requirements include:

  • Registration in the General Division of the active register held by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), or entitlement to registration; for CNS, evidence of specialist practice in the relevant field.
  • Minimum post-registration experience as required (typical minimums: 1 year in the relevant division and 1 year in the specialist area).
  • A third-level qualification at level 9 or higher relevant to the specialist area (equivalent to 60 ECTS or above), aligned with requirements for specialist practice as set out by the National Council for Nursing and Midwifery.
  • Where applicable, agreement to pursue further specialist experience or post-graduate education within two years of employment, to meet pathway requirements.
