Job overviewThe BHOC provides Oncology and Haematology services to the former Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire Cancer Network with a population of approximately 2.2 million people. The BHOC houses D603, the inpatient oncology ward, D703, the inpatient haematology, BMT and IEC unit and the regional teenage and young adult (TYA) inpatient unit, Area 61, as well as the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit where we receive direct admissions of unwell haematology and oncology patients. The BHOC is also the home of the Radiotherapy department, chemotherapy day unit providing a full range of treatments.
The successful applicant will join our ward teams, one based in haematology and two based in oncology, but will also have some time working in both areas and on our SDEC unit. The post holders will be required to contribute to the on call SHO rota in BHOC which is a mix of nights, long days, twilights and weekends.
There is a 32 bedded Oncology ward incorporating 5 teenage and young adult (TYA) beds and two protected sealed/unsealed source rooms, an out-patient suite and a chemotherapy day unit and radiotherapy unit for oncology patients. The Haematology Unit consists of a 24 bedded ward and day units for patients with both malignant and non-malignant disorders. The Bristol Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre and Bone Marrow Transplant service are based on the unit.
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidates will be responsible for the care of inpatients on the Haematology and/or Oncology wards (D603 and D703), including oncology, general haematology and bone marrow transplant patients. Attendance at various outpatient clinics, MDTs and meetings is encouraged by the consultants. The post holders can gain experience in performing procedures including ascitic and pleural drains, bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures.
On-Call Commitment: The post holders will be required to contribute to the on call SHO rota in BHOC which is a mix of nights, long days, twilights and weekends at varying frequency through the year depending on other staffing levels (maximum of 1 in 10 rota). There may be periods without any on calls when they will work 9am-5.30pm Mon Fri, appropriate notice periods will be given for change to frequency in on call pattern.
Teaching and Training: This is a teaching Trust and regular teaching is timetabled in the successful candidate's post. This includes weekly departmental education within Haematology and oncology and weekly joint Haematology & Oncology SHO Teaching. Previous post holders have joined the IMT education and MRCP teaching sessions if interested. There will be opportunities for post holders to deliver teaching to medical students and their SHO colleagues during their time with haematology and oncology.
Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesDay to day clinical responsibilities are seen to be a significant part of the training offered to Clinical fellows, and opportunities are taken for informal clinical teaching as / when appropriate. All doctors are expected to undertake audit and to make a regular contribution to the Departmental academic programme.
There is an excellent Trust Education Centre including library facilities. Opportunities exist for participation in clinical research and there are regular clinical trials and research governance meetings. Laboratory experience is available within the department.
Person specification Knowledge and Experience- GMC registration
- Completion of recognised Foundation Programme or equivalent
- Up to date fit and practise safely
- Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC Good Medical Practice)
- No unexplained career gaps
- Minimum 2 years NHS experience working as a doctor
- Haematology or Oncology experience
- Experience of managing acutely unwell patients
- Good spoken and written English that is adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
- MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification
- MRCP
- ALS
- Undertaken additional teaching courses or qualification
- Ability to maintain good relationships and communication with patients
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with colleagues
- Demonstrates professional behaviour and probity
