We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to embrace the role of Lead Biomedical Scientist at UHSussex East (Brighton)
Working alongside the Head and Deputy Head of service, the experienced Lead Biomedical Scientist will help drive excellence in laboratory operations, providing expert knowledge and understanding of the local Histopathology service and taking responsibility for day to day delivery of the laboratory service at Brighton.
Main duties of the jobThe successful applicant will be directly responsible for the operational delivery of the Cellular Pathology Service at Brighton, providing day to day management of all sections of the laboratory to ensure the delivery of high quality, efficient and cost effective service.
The successful applicant will be responsible for monitoring workflow on a daily basis to ensure that key performance indicators aligned to cancer pathways are met and maintained, escalating concerns to the Deputy Head of Service and Cancer Division where appropriate
The post holder will have line management responsibility for the BMS, Associate practitioner, MLA and secretarial staff and will take the lead role in recruitment, appraisals, health and wellbeing, rota organisation, annual leave requests and laboratory based performance.

Job responsibilitiesResponsible for providing the routine and specialist cellular pathology service for UHSussex East on a day to day basis
Responsible for monitoring workflow on a daily basis, escalating areas of concern or when Tats may be compromised
Responsible for monitoring staff activity, escalating any concerns to the deputy or Head of service
Collaborates with other staff to ensure adequate staffing levels throughout the service, arranges medium/long term staff rotation in collaboration with training officer.
Plans work within the department, prioritising work according to staff resource ensuring surge capacity is appropriately targeted. Brings staffing resource issues to the attention of the Deputy Head of Cellular Pathology
To be responsible for the initial management and investigation of any incidents in the department and for reporting these to the Deputy and Head of Cellular Pathology
To organise appropriate action where a situation develops which may or has caused a service delivery failure.
Person Specification Education- State Registration with the HCPC
- MSC or equivalent in Cellular Pathology
- Previous experience in laboratory management
- Recent experience of working in a UKAS accredited Cellular Pathology Department
- Recent experience at BMS band 7 or above in Cellular Pathology
- Extensive post registration technical experience working in a cellular pathology laboratory
- Experience of managing a team of professionals, including recruitment, appraisal and development.
- Evidence of leading and managing change within a complex environment
- Experience of strategic and service planning for a Speciality Pathology service.
- Budgetary management experience
- Previous experience of using Vantage Tracking Systems
- Evidence of involvement in business case development
- Evidence of having undertaken own development to improve understanding of equalities issues
- Evidence of having championed diversity in previous roles (as appropriate to role).
