Flexible Working Pattern

Help us create a better future, quicker. ScottishPower are delighted to bring to market a role for a Category Manager to help us lead the way to net zero. You will be involved in the procurement, cost and commercial management of contracts to support the expansion of our portfolio of HVDC interlink projects as we head towards our 2030 goals and beyond, enabling electricity generation from wind developments to be efficiently moved to where it is needed by the consumer.

The Category Manager will require strong strategic procurement experience, preferably in energy and/or construction in the UK, with experience of conducting tender exercises in accordance with the Utilities Contract Regulations being desirable. This role focuses on leading multi-billion tender processes on behalf of the strategic joint ventures ScottishPower has entered into with our JV Partner, established to support delivery of interlink assets for the UK consumer.

What you'll be doing

You will join an expanding procurement team within a cross-company, matrix organisation with our partners at the JV Partner. Reporting to the Senior Category Manager, you will have day-to-day management responsibility for the Senior Procurement Consultant in the team. This team is responsible for the procurement of approximately £10 billion of investment projects across the UK Energy network over the next 5 years, in partnership with our colleagues in the JV Partner. Projects primarily support transmission of offshore wind energy onto the UK Grid, delivering energy to consumers efficiently.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and support the procurement requirements for the construction phase of the approximately £6 billion Western Link 2 project and contribute to future projects such as Eastern Green Link 4 and other interlink projects on the UK coast.
  • Provide leadership in contract negotiations and manage commercial and contractual activities pre-contract and, where appropriate, post-contract.
  • Deliver competitive advantage through professional procurement and supply chain management, including supplier management and negotiation of high-value, complex contracts and related commercial issues.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support development, construction and delivery of significant infrastructure projects by understanding business drivers and market dynamics.
  • Develop contracting strategies and negotiate key contracts that meet timescales and specifications.
  • Ensure sourcing from ethical and sustainable suppliers using appropriate contractual and commercial arrangements with appropriate risk allocation.
  • Provide procurement and sourcing advice to stakeholders, coordinating with UK and global colleagues to deliver best value from a common supply chain.
What you'll bring

Ideally, you will have experience in energy procurement and/or construction contracts in the UK. You will be familiar with evaluating supplier bids, cost and commercial contract management and negotiations. In addition, you will possess:

  • Expertise in purchasing practices, tactics, and strategies.
  • Strong commercial contract and negotiation experience, with proven ability to lead full or part of contract negotiations.
  • Good knowledge of HVDC international supply chain for major components.
  • Experience in EPC-type contract procurement.
  • Familiarity with FIDIC and/or NEC4.
  • A commercial, strategic and analytical mindset with technical insight.
  • Self-performance management and delivery focus; ability to balance conflicting requirements; capable of delivering within tight timescales; adaptable in complex environments.
  • Effective teamwork and ability to motivate stakeholders (internal and external) to follow your vision.
  • Strong understanding of financial, commercial and business principles and risk mitigation; knowledge of procurement contract law to seek legal advice when required.
  • Willingness to travel across the UK and beyond to support business requirements.
  • Strong written, numeracy and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer system skills.
