Job Description
CAMHS Liaison Clinical Specialist

The closing date is 08 April 2026

This role is based in the acute hospital Emergency Departments - Queen's Medical Centre, King's Mill Hospital and Bassetlaw Hospital. The service operates 24 hours a day, providing urgent mental health assessment and intervention for children and young people presenting in crisis. The team also provides overnight cover for the Crisis Phone Line between 8pm and 8am.

  • Provide comprehensive specialist assessments including risk assessment and management of young people who present in mental health crisis.
  • Work as an autonomous practitioner, providing evidence based therapeutic interventions and specialist analytical and interpretive skills for young people and their parents/carers with complex needs.
  • Undertake specialised initial assessments of young people following acts of self-harm and attempted suicide, gathering appropriate information from the child, family and other agencies, and offering specialist expertise in child and adolescent mental health.
  • Conduct specialised risk assessments throughout the assessment documentation in appropriate case notes.
  • Participate in the consultation/liaison work of the team with other agencies.
  • Provide liaison psychiatry assessments to young people and their families who attend our acute hospitals/A&E departments experiencing distress, harm to self or other, highlighting concerns related to their emotional wellbeing.
  • Meet agreed appropriate standards.
  • Provide timely, accurate data input.
  • Involve service users in care planning and delivery processes.
  • Ensure high quality risk assessment and treatment through patient records, supervision and team discussion.
  • Collaborate intensively with parents/carers/families to make them aware of the young person's difficulties and needs and to support them as active participants.
  • Facilitate family based interventions sensitively.
  • Reflect upon own clinical practice and that of others in all aspects of care for patients in crisis and their families/carers.
  • Operate as an autonomous practitioner with limited need for day to day supervision.
  • Make safe clinical decisions in pressured situations while keeping the best interests of the young person and family at the heart of the decision making process, with support if required.
  • Work effectively with colleagues from other disciplines throughout assessment and treatment.
  • Demonstrate highly developed report writing skills and manage highly complex, sensitive, distressing and emotional information.
  • Communicate sensitive complex information about the patient's condition to patients and their carers.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safeguarding procedures and experience in managing safeguarding situations, advising colleagues where necessary.
  • Ensure documentation and care plans are comprehensive and of the highest standard in line with Trust policy.
  • Take an active role in the involvement of service users in all aspects of the service.
  • Represent the CAMHS service with partner agencies as a specialist practitioner and be aware of and involved in service development.
  • Work within professional and ethical frameworks established by national bodies such as the Department of Health and the NMC.
  • Provide in reach to young people admitted into psychiatric inpatient beds, supporting them with facilitating home leave and enabling timely discharge.
  • Liaise with and support staff on the trusts 136 suites if a young person is admitted for a Section 136 assessment.
  • Provide support to young people on a Section 136 and families if able to within team capacity.
  • Supervise and support junior staff.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £26.40 (standard) or £54.40 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first 2 months of employment.

You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. An annual fee of £16 per year applies.

A full UK driving licence and vehicle for business use is required for this post; however reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Relevant professional qualification e.g. RMN, RNLD, allied health professional with appropriate accreditation.
  • Registration with relevant professional body.
  • Evidence of post registration learning and development.
  • Additional relevant post graduate training.
Knowledge
  • Ability to maintain accurate case records in line with Trust policies and procedure.
  • Ability to use electronic data recording systems.
  • Knowledge or current policies, strategies and key indicators for the future and development of Child Mental Health Services.
  • Knowledge and understanding of theories and factors which contribute to the development of Children & Young Persons mental health difficulties.

Training
  • Qualification in Student Practice Placement Assessor or Supervisor, or willingness to complete.
  • Experience supporting, mentoring and supervising students on placement.
  • Experience delivering training to groups of professionals or facilitating parent/carer groups or youth focused groups.

Experience
  • Experience of multidisciplinary and multi agency working.
  • Evidence of the ability to use and provide clinical supervision or willingness to undertake training to do so.
  • Ability to be an autonomous practitioner whilst also being an integral part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Proven ability to recognise and respond to identified safeguarding concerns.
  • Competency in meeting performance and data quality targets for the role in a timely manner and understanding of its importance.
  • Understanding of responsibilities in relation to Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, CPA & safeguarding.
  • Experience in developing robust care plans, risk management plans, and safety plans.
  • Competency in completing comprehensive mental health assessment and risk assessment.
  • Relevant post registration experience in CAMHS, acute mental health, crisis team, liaison psychiatry.
  • Experience working in a community based mental health team.
  • Experience coordinating and participating in professionals' meetings, discharge coordination / planning meetings.
  • Experience engaging and building rapport with people around their emotional wellbeing, including those with social communication/neuro diversity.
  • Experience of crisis management.
  • Experience delegating clinical tasks and managing team diary.

Salary: £47,810 to £54,710 a year, pro rata
