Band 8A Advanced Nurse Practitioner, ESAC

We are excited to offer an exceptional opportunity for an experienced and highly motivated Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) to join our newly established Emergency Surgery Assessment Care Unit (ESACU).

This is a pivotal role within a dynamic, fast-paced environment designed to deliver rapid assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting with acute surgical conditions. You will work at an advanced clinical level, playing a key role in shaping and developing this innovative service.

You will be an experienced ANP with a strong clinical background in emergency, acute, or surgical care. You will demonstrate excellent clinical reasoning, decision-making skills, and the ability to work autonomously in a high-pressure environment.

Main duties of the job

Our Emergency Surgery Assessment Care Unit is a new, forward-thinking service focused on:

  • Rapid triage and assessment of emergency surgical patients
  • Avoidance of unnecessary admissions
  • Delivering high-quality, patient-centred care
  • Enhancing patient flow and improving outcomes

You will have the unique opportunity to shape the culture, processes, and clinical pathways of this developing unit.

Key Responsibilities

Perform advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with acute surgical presentations.
Independently manage a defined caseload while working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team.
Request, interpret, and act upon diagnostic investigations.
Initiate and evaluate comprehensive management plans, including prescribing where appropriate.
Facilitate timely patient flow through the ESACU, supporting same-day emergency care pathways.
Provide clinical leadership and expert advice to nursing and junior medical staff.
Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and implementation of evidence-based practice.
Support education, mentorship, and training within the team.

Qualifications

Registered Nurse.

  • MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice
  • Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification
Experience
  • Significant post-registration experience in acute/surgical care
  • Experience in advanced assessment and clinical decision-making
  • Experience of managing acutely unwell patients
  • Clinical history taking & examination skills and planning of care
  • Evidence of implementing change in clinical practice
  • Advanced clinical examination and diagnostic reasoning skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage clinical risk
  • Effective communication and leadership skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and electronic communication skills demonstrating the use of a variety of media/IT skills
  • IT literacy and clinical documentation competence
  • Experience of teaching to a range of staff groups
  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to develop working relationships locally, regionally, and nationally
  • Demonstrate leadership skills in contexts that are unfamiliar, complex, and unpredictable and provide consultancy services to their own and other professions on therapeutic interventions, practice, and service development
  • Maintains professionalism in all aspects of role
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as a team and form professional relationships with colleagues
  • Highly motivated and committed to developing the ANP role/service
  • Take responsibility for own professional development
