Band 7 Respiratory Nurse Specialist - St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The closing date is 11 February 2026.
ResponsibilitiesTo provide specialist respiratory assessment, diagnosis, treatment and care to a range of patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions. The post links closely with SGH acute assessment areas, emergency department, respiratory nurses and chest clinics based at SGH and QMH. It also links with SWLCCG, GPs, community MDT teams and other partners such as Oxygen providers.
Provision of out-patient nurse-led clinics for respiratory conditions, including asthma, COPD and oxygen assessment. Provision of inpatient review of asthma/COPD in-patients. Support development of seamless patient pathways, e.g., inpatient to outpatients. Assessment for long-term and ambulatory oxygen. Provide ongoing support for patients requiring domiciliary non-invasive ventilation (NIV). Support the asthma service and work alongside the severe asthma MDT to provide care for patients with severe asthma, including those requiring biologic therapy. The role may involve these responsibilities within this job description with the emphasis on delivering care to NIV or severe asthma patients as appropriate. Participate in the strategic development of the respiratory service, including:
- Being recognised as an expert in their field holding additional specialist knowledge and experience
- Providing leadership in clinical practice for the professional team and peers and ensuring an educational environment for students
- Working as a competent, autonomous advanced clinical nurse specialist
- Actively disseminating best practice through teaching, publication and conference presentations and participating in nursing research and national working parties

Person Specification Qualifications and Training- Oncology Level 1 or Registered Nurse
- Degree (BSc) or equivalent in a health-related subject
- Advanced Clinical assessment skills accredited module or willing to undertake
- Leadership Training
- Degree (MSc) or willing to undertake
- Relevant Post-registration course (e.g., respiratory/critical care/NIV)
- Non-Medical Prescriber
- Training in spirometry and FeNO testing
- CBG Training with blood gas analysis
- Smoking Cessation level 1/2
- Minimum of 3 years' NHS experience relating to acute care or within a respiratory setting
- Evidence of NIV competence
- Broad range of experience at B5 and B6 level
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Knowledge and experience of a wide range of approaches to the management of respiratory patients demonstrated by advanced clinical reasoning
- Experience of managing junior staff members
- Experience of teaching in a clinical setting
- Experience of student supervision/clinical education
- HDU or critical care experience
- Experience in caring for patients requiring acute NIV
- Experience in initiating and caring for patients requiring domiciliary NIV
- Experience of looking after patients with severe/difficult asthma
- Experience of running research and audit programmes
- Experience of service development / quality improvement
- Ability to lead and motivate others
- Remains updated with professional practice and new research
- Understand the legal responsibilities of the profession
- Able to present information, written and orally, in a clear and logical manner
- Willingness to lead staff training
- Show evidence of being self-motivated
- Ability to cope with working in a stressful and unpredictable environment
- Ability to run courses - internal/external
- Awareness of skill mix and service needs
- Understanding of Clinical Governance and the implications for respiratory services including experience of quality issues and audit
- Remains updated on professional practice and new research
- Clear understanding of safeguarding procedures
