Job Description

We are seeking a Physical Activity Lead to join our Startwell Team, part of Birmingham's obesity prevention programme for Early Years settings.

Startwell supports nurseries, Children's Centre, parents, and health professionals to create healthier environments for children and families. The programme focuses on eight key messages around food, physical activity and oral health, helping Early Years settings achieve the Startwell Award by meeting set criteria.

Main duties of the job

The team has a variety of job roles including Nutritionists and Early Years lead. This allows for shared learning and experiences within the team. The post holder will manage their own caseload of Early Years settings, guiding them through the Startwell Award process and offering tailored support. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the team are up to date on early years physical activity and are using evidence based practices.

In addition, the post holder will design and deliver training on Startwell and physical activity for Early Years settings and professionals at centralised sessions. This role offers the opportunity to make a real difference to children's health and wellbeing across Birmingham.

Person Specification Qualifications and training
  • Qualifications / training - Relevant degree or equivalent experience in physical activity.
  • Qualifications / training -Evidence of continuous professional development
Experience
  • Experience of working with parents & professionals and children under five on healthy lifestyle programmes
  • Significant experience of developing, implementing and evaluating projects
  • Experience of working on the Startwell programme or similar Early Years health promotion initiative
  • Experience of writing training & running training packages for health and Early Years professionals
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working
Skills/knowledge
  • Ability to plan and manage own time
  • Ability to generate written communication which is relevant, concise, accurate and legible
  • Understanding of influences on physical activity within a community setting
  • Evidence of good verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of services for children under five in Birmingham
  • Ability to work with all agencies across voluntary, education, health & social services sectors
  • Ability to run & critically evaluate training sessions with people from a range of backgrounds
  • Expert knowledge of physical activity recommendations and priorities for children under five
  • An understanding of diversity and how it impacts on physical activity practice
  • Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of up-to-date, evidence based, clinical trends and practices
  • Knowledge of nutrition recommendations for children under five.
