Azure Virtual Desktop Engineer
UK SC clearance required to start this project
Start: ASAP
Duration: 6-12 months
Location: hybrid (ad hoc travel to Gloucester)
Pay: inside IR35, up to £425 p/day
We're seeking an experienced Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) SME to join a dedicated Virtual Devices team operating in a Scaled Agile environment. This is a hands-on technical role focused on the support, administration, and development of a global AVD estate used by over 5,000 users.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and operate a secure, scalable AVD environment (single & multi-session)
- Support all aspects of AVD: host pools, images, application/user access, resource groups
- Administer and troubleshoot FSLogix profiles and storage solutions (e.g. NetApp)
- Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, PowerShell, ARM Templates, and Azure CLI
- Maintain the supporting Windows environment: Group Policies, OU, application configs, patching
- Work within a CI/CD DevOps pipeline via GitHub Repos
- Provide end-user support, manage incidents, and ensure DR/high availability
- Contribute to knowledge sharing and cross-skilling junior team members
- Participate in on-call support (1-in-3 rota)
Essential Skills
- UK SC Cleared and able to start within 2 months
- Strong hands-on experience with Azure Virtual Desktop architecture and administration
- Proficiency with host pool management, FSLogix, user/app access, and multi-user environments
- Solid understanding of Windows OS, Group Policy, and application troubleshooting
- Experience supporting AVD in an enterprise or global environment
- Infrastructure automation experience with Terraform and PowerShell
- Strong grasp of Azure fundamentals and cloud best practices
Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with Azure DevOps, GitHub CI/CD pipelines, ARM templates, and Azure CLI
- Experience in Agile/Scrum delivery models
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience with tools such as JIRA and ServiceNow
