We are looking for an Automation Engineer to join the team located at one of our client sites in Cambridge. In this role, you will be responsible for managing, coordinating, and executing day-to-day Laboratory Instrument Support activities. You will deliver high-quality, specialized engineering support to Lab Automation, including but not limited to, Cell analytical equipment, Liquid Handling devices, Flow Cytometry, and Target equipment such as Agilent (Velocity11), Thermo, Hamilton, Molecular Devices, Matrix, Tecan, Beckman, Compound Management Storage, and Microplate Imaging.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as 'first-responder' for critical equipment breakdowns, ensuring minimal impact on scientific activity.
- Ensure prompt, flexible, customer-focused specialist engineering support while maintaining compliance with statutory, regulatory, and engineering standards.
- Diagnose faults on complex equipment and systems utilizing internal and external multidisciplinary support to produce satisfactory solutions.
- Plan and carry out engineering maintenance and commissioning work associated with scientific equipment and systems in a safe, cost-effective manner to ensure minimal business disruption.
- Use technical knowledge to identify and source components and services.
- Create, manage, and review supporting documentation such as service reports.
- Support users in the preparation and design of operating procedures, SOPs, Change Control, manuals, and drawings.
- Manage the availability of essential spares to support laboratory equipment and systems cost-effectively.
- Support contract management in setup, renewal, and budgeting of contracts.
- Monitor the performance of scientific equipment using KPIs to instigate improvements and influence changes.
- Support management activities to ensure completion of all tasks.
- Act as an ambassador to PerkinElmer, ensuring a first-class service is delivered at all times.
Requirements:
- Advanced Modern Apprenticeship with NVQ 3 in engineering.
- HNC/HND in relevant engineering discipline.
- 5+ years experience in Laboratory Instrument Support across scientific and automated systems.
- Strong analytical skills with proven problem-solving ability.
- Experience in a fast-paced, operational environment.
- Excellent relationship management and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Robust attitude towards results and motivating teams.
- High customer focus.
- City & Guilds inspection/testing certification.
- Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Science, or Engineering.
- Experience in pharmaceutical/regulatory environments.
- Knowledge of PC hardware, architecture, and communication systems (Ethernet, RS232, etc.).
- Experience with CMMS systems.
