Job Purpose
BBC Media Operations is at the heart of teams delivering incredible content across all our platforms for all audiences. Comprising around nine hundred people, it manages the craft and production operations for the BBC's news, radio, and sport services across London, Salford, and Birmingham - capturing, editing, and producing our output 24x7 for TV, radio, and online. Our team are experts in their field with exceptional technical, operational and production creativity at their heart. Working closely together with our editorial colleagues, we co-create all content reaching millions of people across the UK and the World daily. The team is also responsible for the management of production services, stores, and some audio, fleet vehicles and OB bases in England.
We are looking for Assistant Technical Producers to join the BBC in London over the busy summer period. Technical producers have extensive craft audio experience and work on live and recorded speech and music, planning and delivering outside broadcasts and in broadcast studios in W1 and Maida Vale. You will work on a range of live and recorded studio work and editing sessions for BBC national radio stations. An interest in and passion for music and sound engineering skills and technology are a prerequisite for the role. Successful candidates will be working across all national music stations.
BBC Media Operations covers a diverse range of events including Glastonbury, golf, The Proms, comedy performance, opera, tennis tournaments and concerts, as well as complex one-off events at home and abroad; State Events, Paralympics and the Olympics are all delivered by staff from Operations. We produce a large amount of studio based output for our Radio Networks. We also manage and run events in the BBC Radio Theatre and we have a suite of specialist music studios at Maida Vale.
Main Responsibilities
Assistant Technical Producers are expected to have the required knowledge and experience to undertake all the duties as described below, working in radio studios, workshops, suitably equipped office areas and where appropriate on outside broadcasts. You'll be required to balance and control radio shows and be confident working on your own in a live studio You will need to work well as part of a team and you will also be relied upon to play your part in the delivery of the media aspects of productions on time and to budget.
• Use audio craft skills on productions, including straight-forward studio and outside broadcasts and events. Offering operational and creative guidance and advice to other colleagues and production staff.
• Use craft specialism to assemble audio objects utilising current production tools.
• Developing specialist skills whilst retaining the capability to balance and control the whole range of radio productions, working on own or in teams.
• Advise contributors, including actors and musicians, on aspects of performance relating to the sound balance.
• Rig and de-rig studio and outside broadcast equipment, directing others as appropriate, ensuring that the installed equipment can be used in a safe manner.
• Set up and test communications, recording and broadcast systems.
• Liaise with other organisations in order to agree and co-ordinate the provision of on-site facilities.
• Support to liaise with production and artists regarding their technical requirements and to stage manage where necessary.
• Assist in the development of new effective ways of working.
• Assist with forward planning, liaising on all matters relating to technical production, developing and maintaining good professional relations with programme departments.
• The planning of straight-forward recordings, transmissions, events and outside broadcasts (OBs), including equipment and logistical planning and supporting the appropriate allocation of resources.
Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have live radio studio experience and be able to balance and control radio shows whilst working on your own in a live studio!
- You should demonstrate an enthusiastic interest in the professional media field and show that you keep pace with new developments.
- You will also need to demonstrate you have good communication skills and experience of managing relationships both within the team and outside.
- You should have good planning and organising skills, and demonstrate a flexible approach to work.
Interview Process
Interviews will be held week on the 19th and 20th May. They will be held in person in London Broadcasting House. They will consist of both BBC Value based questions and a live technical test.
